hey hammered i remember a while back you put together a 4 piston brake setup for your car i was wondering where you had your calipers rebuilt and where you got your rotors from? i have the 2 1/16" bore thanks
I actually have a set of original two piece rotors but decided to sell them to a restorer and ordered the one piece units through Classic Industries during one of their sales. I knocked the races out that came with them and installed the ones that came with my Timken bearings.
I wound up getting my calipers through Autozone although I had to send the left back because the first one was so messed up. Otherwise, I would've gone through Muskegon Brake for the rebuild. SSBC charges more and I've heard some complaints about their work. You will need to take a bank note out if you want to have Whitepost do them. If your cores are nice, definitely work with someone that will rebuild YOURS and return them to you.
I'm currently trying to talk Hawk Performance into manufacturing (street) performance brake pads. The other alternative is to buy the same year 'Vette pad and radius the ends of the backing plate.
So you had the originals and bought some at autozone and gave them the cores? how much did you pay for the calipers? Is there anyone that sells a rebuilt kit for them? why did you pop the races off the rotors, were they different from the ones that come with the Timken bearings? over all do you regret going with the 4 piston set up ? how are the brakes working for you ? thanks these will be the last questions
My car is long from getting on the road so I can't say how they work. I did not have my original cores. I found a rebuilt pair real cheap and then learned that one was for big cars. They look identical but have about ~3/8" more gap between the halves to compensate for a thicker rotor. So I bought one from Autozone and sent it back because the bleeder was poorly repaired. I wound up getting a second from Advanced Auto (the core charge was only $20) so I could sell my rebuilt big car caliper. Overall I've got about $250 in rebuilt calipers and a lot of headaches:) You'll find that it will cost you more than that to get yours rebuilt. The problem with Autozone is that you may get one that's been ground for wheel clearance or otherwise beat up. I strongly advise getting your originals rebuilt. The cost is high because they put stainless steel sleeves in them. You can get a seal kit from Ames for about $25/side if I remember correctly.
I took the races out of the new rotors because I figured they might be of poor quality. There was no other reason because they would've worked fine.
If you've got all the original brackets and parts, stick with them. I think a conversion will only lead to other problems.
what do you mean by </font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif"> I think a conversion will only lead to other problems. </font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">
I know of several instances where people replaced the 4 piston caliper setup with a single piston setup. There are quite a few parts to change over and it seems that some people who have done it have had trouble getting the front to rear proportioning correct. There are others who have done it and are very happy.
Hey John where did you order your hydraulic brake hoses from?? reason i ask is because i went to classic industries and the ones they tried to sell me didn't have a notch at the tip.(hope that makes sense)meaning they looked like they were for a camaro! one last thing i was going to buy the reproduction of the original brake pads that classic industies sells but then i saw that raybestos sells some too i dont want my rotors to wear out so fast cause they are expensive which pads do you recommend i get? thanks for all your help
As far as I know, all of the pads currently available for the original calipers are made with organic brake linings which are the "softest" you can buy. I would get the Raybestos pads through someone locally. Believing that you can never have too much stopping capacity, I'm working to get Hawk Performance to make street performance pads for our cars.
hey john thanks for all your help you have been wonderful! i plan i bolting my brakes on my car real soon i will tell you how everything works out. oh by the way do you know where to get the gasket to the backing plate? and did you notice that "RightStuff" has the 4 piston rotors for $59.00 as apposed to classic industries price of $119.00 i went this weekend to buy the rotors from them and after seeing the "RightStuff" price i am going to return them. And both Classic Industries and RightStuff rotors are made in canada.
I didn't notice that Right Stuff has better prices on rotors. Double check with them before returning your CI pieces because it sounds too good to be true.
As for the gaskets, you can either make them or use the '70 up pieces sold by CI and others. The '70 up gaskets are 1/4" larger in diameter. I got lazy and used the '70 up pieces. I used a little silicone to center them before bolting the backing plates on. I think they will work well.
What did you wind up doing with your calipers may I ask?
I'm glad I could be of help - the front brakes were one of the more challenging parts of my resto.
I am looking around for a local shop who can rebuilt them. turns out one shop will charge me $75 a caliper w/o sleeving them. they also have the original two piece rotors. They are in used condition with some life left but the guy wants alot for them. as far as the rotors for $59 i am going to call first thing tommorow and check but on the website they have them listed for that price!
Hey john guess what i called RIGHT STUFF and indeed the price is correct on the rotors! I went ahead and ordered them, I am going to wait until they get here and compare them to the ones I got from CI. But I guess thats good news for us because I thought paying $119.00 for each rotor was insane! well thanks once again and i'll talk to you later
At least I got the 20% discount with my CI rotors  It's just money, right????
Unless you're doing a concours restore, I'd stay away from the two piece.
From everything I've read, you would do good to get your calipers sleeved. It would be better to pay more now, than to pay $75 only to have to do it again in the near future.
