What do you soak parts in to be cleaned? I go through lots of brake cleaner and would rather let metal items soak in a cleaner and then hose them off with water, if possible.
If you are looking to clean metal parts that are grimy, there is a water soluable parts cleaner that is sold at Harbor Freight. It somes in gallon bottles, relatively cheap and works like you wouldn't beleive. I bought some a while back when I had a parts cleaner. Never dreamed a water based product would actually work. But, it DOES!
For grimy engine parts or greasy parts in general I use Easy Off oven cleaner and then hose off with water. Gets off all the but the hardest baked on stuff. And it's easy to get.
Any parts house will sell you parts cleaners in 1/2 and gallon jugs. Some are biodegradable. I usually cut them half and half with water and fill a 5 gallon pool chlorine bucket with a lid.
Even the mildest will work great if you soak it long enough. In time it will even remove cheap "rebuild black" spray paint.
