do it, relocating for a job is always a jump in salary..
I'm really concerned about the schools and I saw the average temp in Jan. is 12 degrees... I hate the cold. But the property taxes were less than $4,000.00 on a $700,000.00 dollar home. Which means I can up grade on my current home and pay less taxes (currently paying $12,000). I could get my daughter and wife the pony. But I need to know that my kids will get a good education and have things to do
Taxes suck... They only keep going up, and they spend them on things that don't benefit my family. I don't mind paying for schools for kids, but they vote down the school budget every year so they can buy another firetruck. I live in horse country in NJ where the tallest building is three stories and we have ladder trucks that could reach a skyscrapper. They only time they get used is for the parade and kids birthday parties.
Well, my advise to anyone who has an opportunity to move when your job is the reason, is to do it! I worked for Circuit City from 95-02. In that time we moved (a wife and 3 kids) from NY to NJ to VA to PA to CA back to PA then back to NY where we started (the only move that I was not happy with). With every move it was a new position, salary increase and a new experience.
People always said, what about the kids, they have school, they have friends etc. etc. etc. Well, IMO there is no better way to teach your kids about all of the above than to allow them to experience change. Our kids learned a lot, met new people, made new friends (some still to this day) and they love the fact that we all learned so much from these places etc.
Our kdis would have never experienced any of those things had I not taken a gamble and stayed in the same old going nowhere fast Buffalo, NY. We had fun and we all learned a lot about this country and the people in it. I would not have changed any of it looking back.
One life leason the moving also taught the kids was to embrace change, take on challenges, be adaptable, be willing and able to adapt to a new world, climate etc. Remember, this is a global economy now, the days of staying in the same old town for your entire life are less and less likely with every passing year. Kids nowdays need to be adaptable or they will have less opportunites than those who are willing and able.
not sure excactly where that is , but maybe you should make the FGF Cannonbird Run Estes Park cruise in August , deduct it from taxes as a "job hunting trip"?
Bjorn & Johnny, Those are great ideas, but I have to make the decision within 30 days and I work for the government (please don't hold that against me) so there isn't any negotiations and I have to pay for the move myself since they are only looking for volunteers. But the change of pace and scenery is what is making me consider this.
Keep in mind, making a move for job related has several tax deductions. So much so that the move shouldn't actually cost you anything in the end, especially because you are paying for the move out of pocket. All in all, well worth it in my opinion from several angles...
I think the wife and I are going to have a sitdown tomorrow night and discuss the options. I found an awesome house using the internet, but might make an early anniversary trip out there to check it out.
