Purchased my 2nd 67 firebird and I love it!!!! car is all original 400 from San Fran California with original bill of sale and build sheet I even got the original plate issued to the lady still on the front of this beauty !!!! I cant wait till I figure out this computer thing to post pictures of both of them. Any way wondering if I would hurt the value of it to add a hood tach (they do look hot) Any advice would definetly help me . Also how to post pictures. One more thing where can I get a 67 smog pump for a 400???????
If you love it's original condition and it means a lot to you - I would forgo the hood tach. You can easily mount one above the steering column without causing a permanent change.
Why do you want a smog pump when they are only required if the car was still resgistered in CA?

Ahhh, I think I know where my 67 ended up. Don't put a hood tach on that car! You have to cut a 4 inch hole in that beautiful hood! You will not likely find the smog pump because it is a one year one state item. You should have it rebuilt. Jim
Smog pump: I can help a little as my car had one and it's not going back on. But I have not completed that operation yet.
Removal of the pump and hoses is easy. I suspect that we will need different fan belts to eliminate the pump from the system. You will have to remove the cast aluminum bracket from in front of the RH cylinder head. The LH bracket also supports the PS pump and alternator so it needs to stay. Luckily that bracket was the same whether the car came with a smog pump or not.
Finally, you will need to install the freeze plugs on the front of both cylinder heads that lead to the exhaust passages that the smog pump blew air through.

Pauly, congrats on the new Bird, she sounds awesome!
What I would do is do all the little things that you'll want to do for the first year or so. Then save up a bit, and buy a reproduction 400 hood, and a repro hood tach, have them painted to match the car, and put the original hood in safe storage! That way you have the best of both worlds, and it will not effect the value! You can put the original hood back on IF, God forbid you ever sell the car, and still will get your money out of the hood and hood tach as they wont devalue either. And the wiring for the hood tach will tuck out of the way when not used.
The A.I.R. system (Air Injection Reactor) is hard to find parts for and or replace. By all means keep it, but you can remove it, clean it all up, box and again store it away for safe keeping! Do you have the original red sticker on the right of the radiator core support bracket for it? If so I'd love to see a couple pictures of it. I have a picture of an original, but in poor shape.
To post pictures, go to a free picture hosting site like: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com or http://photos.msn.com/ and follow their instructions, sing up, and you can up load pictures directly from your PC or a picture CD in your computer to an on line photo album, and then can share the link (web address) to that album with your friends and family etc...
If you need more help on that let us know and we'll help, as I'm sure there are lots here that would love to see your new Bird!
Oh yeah, Mark brought up something I didn't mention... you can keep the same pulleys, but will just have one belt missing... and an extra groove.
I still have my system too, just tucked away and will never use, but it's still kool to have all the original parts. If either of you get's rid of the parts, let me know, I'd be interested... why? No idea... but like to hang on to that kind of stuff...
Thanks Brett, Aftermarket hood is a great idea. never thought of it. Cars black with black interior. 400 with 400 tranny. I paid $13,500 for car and would of paid anything. I do have that original sticker I wont be able to post that picture till next week. Going away for a few days. My other 67 has deluxe interior, fold down rear seat, power windows, 350 with auto. Thanks for the advice guys

Pauly, That's my old car!! I sold it to Roy Dukes. Very nice car! Thelma took good care of her for all those years. It's one of the most original California 67's I've seen. I would paint it red just like original. Congratulations! Jim
I saw the auction and watched it from beginning to end. I was hoping someone would win it that would truely appreciate it. I'm very pleased that you bought the car. The icing on the cake is that you ended up here on this site too! Jim
Pauly, congrats on your 'bird! Mine's a 67 400 vert, no hood tach. I was going to add one, but I've owned it for a year, and I LOVE the uncluttered look of that hood, with just the twin intakes-looks so much more symetrical. I added a small (2 5/8") summit tach, mounted on the steering column, it's low profile and looks great. Enjoy!!
