My 400 was optioned with lights, but they were missing when I bought the car. What kind of lights do I use, where can I get them, and where are they mounted? Thanks
Paul , I do not know about the hood light ,but my 69 has the trunk light...the wire comes up out of the trunk attached to the drivers side trunk hinge...then goes under neath the metal to the hole on the drivers side of the latch, if you open the trunk and look at it, there`s a round hole ea side of the latch, theres another hole 'looking' towards the front just next to this thats where the trunk light socket is attached w one small screw....the light itself comes on as you open, its alwas 'hot' in other words , and I think its a "level switch" in there , that comes on when its tilted .....if you want a picture I do have one w trunk open where you see the wires, but not really showing the socket...but I can take one if you want...
I don't believe the courtesy light option included the hood light and trunk light. On a convertible, the courtesy lights include the underdash lights, ashtray light and glove box light. The underdash light harness and bulb socket housings are available from Ames and PY as is the glove box light harness. I have not seen the ashtray harness available anywhere. On a coupe, I believe the courtesy lights included interior sail panel lights.
Also included in that lighting accessory package was the ignition light that lite up the ignition key when the door was open. That part I have never seen in reproduction or used. I would love to get a hold of that part of the kit. Anyone know where I may get it? Anyone have that option on there bird? Any pictures?
That lighted switch was not available on the '67s as far as I know. I have the lighted ignition switch itself which I collected somewhere along my travels but I'm missing the special bezel. The switch has the socket holder cast into it.
Hammered, I have a 68 bird myself. Can I get a picture of the socket holder? I would like to see a real one. Going to classic swap meet this weekend. Maybe Ill get lucky?
My PHS docs state underdash lights and hood and luggage (unless I misread it, that's at my office I'll recheck on Monday) The underdash & ashtray lights are in place - I saw the square hole next to the trunk for that light. Does the wire come off the loom in the rear of the trunk, or does it come off at the rear lights and double back? Whoever had the car before me attempted a crappy restoration, and I'm trying to bring it back to mostly stock. She's highly optioned, and pretty cool. Where do I get the light???
Here's your picture. Sorry for the quality but it's the best I could do of about 10 shots. The hole in top is where the light socket attaches and the trough/groove cut through the threads provides a tunnel for the light to reach the front of the key cylinder:
As others have mentioned the standard courtesy lights for 67 convertible were two under dash lights, and the rear console light just under the ashtray on the console. The Lighting group option added the Glove box light, the under hood light and the trunk light.
courtesy lights for the standard package can be found in most all of the repro parts houses. Ames, Classic, Y/O etc.. the Glove box light is also readily available. The undfer the hood and the trunk light can usually be found there too, or they used the same lights for many models and years up through the early 70's... so you can always find one on ebay! But make sure you know just what you are looking for, as the sellers descriptions are not always accurate!
I just need to replace (find) the under hood and trunk lights yet myself... but that is way dow the list and usually something I look for over the winter when I'm not working on other things on the car...
(In 68 they added the dash ashtray fiber optic light and the ignition light and eliminated the rear ashtray and rear light on the consoles)
I can take and send picures of locations and placement of the courtesy lights if you need?
My '67 with courtesy lights also had a dash ashtray light that was electrical. I've seen a number of cars with it so I'm pretty sure it's stock. It mounts to the front corner of the ashtray bracket and is a small bulb with a sabot covering it. The sabot has a 1/16" hole that directs the light down into the ashtray.
On my '69 the trunk light functions only when the tail lights are on and is controlled by the mercury switch, it's powered through a Y-cable on the taillight harness. Kind of nice for tailgate parties...

My trunk light used to work (after I replaced a burned out bulb), it worked always when the trunk was opened... but suddenly last year I burned fuses when it was on,(a short somewhere) so I pulled the trunk light wire from the fuse block, didnt want to 'search' for the short....decided the trunk light wasnt important for me....but I DO have one...lol
I'm in the same boat as Paul - my '67 originally came with underhood and luggage lamps, but both are missing. There is an orange wire in the trunk that connects to the harness in the fuel filler area, and is now just laying on the floor of the trunk. Under the hood, there is a wire attached to the voltage regulator that is routed along the left fender and ends with a connector near the wiper motor.
Both lights are missing. Does anyone have pictures of where the lights are supposed to mount and how the wires are routed?
Pete, my 69 wire is black or maybe brown (cant remember , but it comes out from drivers side wheel well w the other wires, then goes up on drivers side trunk hinge goes under the sheet metal to the hole just to the left of (as youre looking at it)the latch on the trunk lid... I dont think it would be anywhere near the fuel filler area....I have one pic of the rear of trunk lid , kinda shows the wire a little, but no pic of the light itself , but certainly can take one....(this is trunk light only, my engine was painted bright yellow , I think that was in lieu of the underhood light...LOL)
if you need a pic or more, email me direct at bsefeldt@mhinc.com and I`ll take some and send ...
Hammered, thanks for the pic. It helps out alot. Looks like I may be able to make something up and get it to work. If you ever want to sell the ignition with the light let me know. I'll buy it. Thanks again I really appreciate it.
Thanks for the info! How does the wiring run off the trunk wire harness to the light, and how does the light go on and off? Brett, can you email me some pix of the placement of the hood light? I know where the trunk light goes, just not sure of the wiring location.
Paul, the light goes on when trunk is opened , like a mercury switch...it has to do w the tilt of the lid...not sure how the wires run ,but I`ll try to remember to look, maybe get a pic.
that matches the pics I took last nightof the routing ( took them for nothing..., thanks alot Vikki!) lol
except my wire is black, (prob. got spliced somewhere) because at the splitter its that same orangy/brownish color, but now has some spattter paint on it...
Yes, most of the Lighting group wiring should be orange.
Paul, I'm not sure if I have any pix of the under hood light or not? I'll look and see. I'll also look for a wiring Diagram, and will let you know if I can find anything?
Nice thread... we all can learn a little from this one!
FYI - I also have the small bulb mounted above the ashtray on my '67. It's still attached to my main wiring harness that I pulled out of the car, so if I remember over the long weekend - I will can e-mail a photo (no web site for posting).

What's left of my trunk light wiring is like Yellowbird's. There is a splitter under the trunk latch that taps into the license light wiring. From there, it is routed back past the left tail lights to the left hinge support. At that point there is another connector where the light can be disconnected if the hood is removed. I have that connector and about 8 inches of wire which has then been cut. With this set up, the light will only be on when the license light is lit.
My replacement light (not installed yet) is from M&H and has a splitter to tap into the dome light harness near the left wheel well. The M&H light has a black wire with a tilt switch. This light will work any time the trunk is opened. This sounds like the setup Bjorn has.
I would also like to see a picture of the correct underhood lamp and how it is mounted. I got a replacement from one of the usual catalog suppliers and the directions show mounting points for Pontiac and Tempest. Both of these mount to the firewall. Seems to me that the light would be mounted too low to do any good!
Here is some more info on the '67 ashtray light. The light is screwed to the front left corner of the ashtray support bracket (nearest the ashtray opening. The bulb is a 1445 and fits into a totally enclosed metal cap that has a small hole in it to let the light shine down into the ashtray. The gray wire goes up and over the steering column and is plugged into the LIGHTS terminal of the fuse block. It is not part of the main dash harness. Here are a couple pictures.
And you are correct. The reason I thought the ashtray light was attached to the main harness is because my entire harness INCLUDING the fuse panel is in a rat's nest in a box and the ashtray light is still plugged into the fuse panel.
I knew I saw it in there!
And BTW - why is this option NOT listed on my PHS documentation? I have wondered.

Select "Order Parts", then scroll down to the Wiring Harnesses section. That link brings up the following .pdf file. Wiring Harnesses
The first page is about the Factory Fit harnesses they sell. On the second page is a listing for a '67 Ashtray lamp wire and socket. No picture so I don't know if this includes everything or not.
This is the first time I've found any source for this lamp and thought some people might be interested.
