Is there a larger oil filter than the Fram PH25 that will fit the 400? It seems rather small.

On a SBC and BBC motor, there is a filter that fits and is about 2x larger than the one the books call for. The larger one is about a 1 quart capacity.

Is there something for the 400 that's similar to the Chevy example?

I know there are 2 sizes, one that's about 2.5 inches tall, and one that's about 4-5 inches tall.

The guys at the autoparts store would know. I always have to ask.

All the old Pontiacs take the same sizes...

The PH25 is correct and is the taller of the two. My only recommendation is to buy the best filter out there (Wix) and or the Napa Gold (made by Wix). I've had 3 different Pontiac motor builders tell me to use them exclusively. They are a bit more, but worth it IMO. I buy them 6 at a time and pay like $5.95 each

Interesting, I will have to look for them....I am due for a change now, have not done the mileage or am close but the time dictates I should...even tho the oil is still super clean.

there are many sizes that'll fit... the napa numbers you may want are 1258 this is about 1 qt and resembles the SBC. if you have headers you may want the 1045 thats a smaller diameter but same length. the old chevys also had a 2 qt spin on that some med duty trucks used but on an old pontiac it'll hang too low and not worth the risk.

I just picked up a Fram HP (racing) series filter...about 1" longer than the PH25 and has bigger oil ports in the base. The grooves for the seal were deeper and it uses a taller seal so don't use your PH25 seal with it or you will have a mess! Ask me how I found out yesterday!

Yes, the NAPA Gold series (Wix) filter is the 1258 for ALL Pontiacs. And yes, our owner's manuals do state 6 quarts with filter change. This comes up from time to time and yes, 6 quarts is correct when changing the filter...
