On air conditioned 68 firebirds, where does the black with orange stripe wire (that comes out of the cowl's wiring gutter, with the blue oil pressure switch wire and the black transmission kickdown) go? (I know it goes to the blower motor on non-ac cars..not so on AC cars.)
Jamiel My 67 conv with AC has the same wire, It is long enought to reach the front of the motor and has a rubber boot that is a push on connector. I also dont know where it goes. have blue oil wire, fan wire, alt wire and trans wire. I hope someone can solve this
The fast idle solenoid wire is dark green. I got an AC wiring diagram for the 68 firebird; it shows everything but this black with one orange stripe wire that comes out of the passenger side of the wiring gutter on the cowl. (8point - This 68 diagram shows the #12 wire that has an orange stripe top AND bottom, goes to a 30 amp fuse link and then on to the "Bat" terminal of the horn relay. That's the high speed fan fuse link. Not sure if that's the one you're looking at...but it's very long.)
Thanks Quenton. I had that diagram also. I think it's for a tempest or pontiac, or possibly a 67. The color codes don't match up on a 68 AC firebird. My car was produced the second week of October 1967. I guess wiring could have changed sometime in the modle run?
I hate being in the dark. Are you restoring a car or trying to fix a car? What is working and what is not? What original options does the car have? It would help to figure out where the wire goes. Does your purple blower wire have the factory boot on the end? Jim
Jim, My car is a 67 400 conv wtih AC, AM-FM ,speed minder ,ps, pb, car has # matching drive drain.(am now modifying but have orignal parts)Wire harness is orignal. This is what I have on the passenger side, out of the firewall gutter is Blue(oil sender), black(trans kick down),black with orangestripe(??????). From AC realy, black with orange stripe and 30 amp fuse(to alt) from firewall, purple(to blower motor, through a capacitor(for am-fm) black (ground )My blower motor workes in all positions. The mistery wire is long enought to reach the radiator, and my carb did not have a fast idle solonoid. Thanks Jim Goodrich.
I tested the mistery wire today, put 12-v test light in plug and tried every switch and knob in car. no power to wire, traced it back through harness to back of fuse block, hooked up ohm meter to wire and tested all termanals on fuse block, no reading. the black orange stripe wire has a molded plug end like the oil wire only smaler. ?????
Are you able to tell us the terminal # that it ataches to? It would be interesting to look at the schematics and see if it is connecting to somthing or just going to a blank.
sorry to hijack your post but can some tell me how the kickdown switch on the passanger side is suppost to run all the way over to the driver side of the tranny? Every th400 I have ever seen has the switch on the driver side.
I have this same issue - the black/orange stripe wire and right now it is hanging unconnected. I have a/c as well. I thought it was for the blower motor. I know . . . I'm not helping, am I? I just wanted to chime in to say that it must not be a coincidence that all of us w/ a/c have this hanging wire.
So...still a mystery as to the black with single orange stripe wire! With it unhooked does everyting work on your car? Those of you that have 68 AC cars...regarding the other heavier #12 black wire with two orange stripes...it's the one with the 30 amp fuse line. Does your wire go to the horn relay battery terminal or the alternator hot post? Also, where in that line is the fuse connector located? Someone asked about my car. I'm just completing a frame off resoration. The car was previously an old lady's car from Stockton, CA...completely untouched. It a 400, auto, air, PS, PB, ralley IIS, mayfair maze with black vinyl top car. All numbers matching.
I'm not sure about the black w/ double orange stripes. I will have to check that out. I do know that it does NOT go to my alternator. I only have a heavy duty red wire going to the alternator. Actually, I don't remember seeing a black w/ double orange stripe wire, and wiring is all I've been working on since I got my Bird, it seems. I will try to look for you.
Any other folks out there with a 68 400 car with AC? Still trying to resolve the mystery of the black with orange stripe wire that comes out of the wiring gutter and the routing of the heavier black with two orange stripes that has the 30 amp fuse link.
That was my picture, sixstarved just saved me from looking bad (not able to post the pic) The top wire is the one we cant figure out, the next one goes to the alt to power the high speed on the fan. next is the trans kickdown, bottom one for AC compressor. My blower motor is already hooked up and working, blue oil sender wire to. Original wireing harness (67 400 conv AC)
8 point, so the fused wire did go to the alternator not the horn relay? The only idea I have on the other (black with single stripe wire) is hood light or hood tac, if so equipped. Does everything work on your car with the mystery wire unhooked?
