First off, I have a M-22 on a '68 400. Last night I took my car out to do some errands. As I was backing out of a parking spot, I smelled an intense burning smell inside the passenger compartment. When I put it into 1st and started to drive, the smell wasn't as prevalent and pretty muched stopped. I've had the car for about six months now and usually when I shift for a stationary position, there is a slight smell, but last night was the worst. Any ideas?
Check for a plastic bag melted to the exhaust pipes (really stinks!), or for oil leaks onto same. If you're not abusing the clutch, you shouldn't smell anything. Since you said you smelled it most from a stopped position, the movement may cause something to dump onto the exhaust. One more thought, maybe a short in the reverse light wiring?
