I just bought a 67 firebird 400,4spd. I am working on the floor pans and thought it would make sense to replace the heater core and fan motor. No AC on this car. Do i have to take off the front fender to get this fan motor out??? It is tight in behind the wheel well on the firewall.
YOU DONT HAVE TO BUT IT IS ALOT EASIER WHEN IT IS REMOVED..YOU CAN UNBOLT THE INNER FENDER OR CUT A AXCESS HOLE IN IT.MOST PEOPLE WOULD NOT CUT THE AXCESS HOLE.IT WOULD ALSO BE A GOOD IDEA TO REPLACE THE BLOWER MOTOR WHILE YOU ARE AT IT.GOOD LUCK.
I've replaced several of these on '67s and you do NOT have to remove the fender to replace the heater core. Everything comes out from the inside. The fan motor is a different story and is as 69firebirdman says. That is unless your arms are the diameter of a todler's, but longer than a grown adult's and with an extra joint.
It sounds like your doing some body work anyway so I would recommend counting up and do a inventory on your fender shims and pull the whole front clip. It is easier then taking off one fender in my opinion. Do all your work on the heater box and paint the firewall. I like to make small jobs into fram up restorations.
