Does anyone know where I could find something that shows the different length of head bolts and their locations?
I have a couple of bolts that are about an inch too long. One is a standard style head bolt, the other has a stud, similar to the bolts that secure the oil drip rails/deflectors.
Have a fax? Send ya copy of Pontiac's part catalog that shows 5 out of the 8 locations and lengths.
Thanks for the offer! I didn't think about looking at the parts catalog. I found the page you are looking at. I'll look at my copy. Maybe it will help me remember how I removed them.
I just can't see how those two bolts could have ever came off the heads! Not being an 1" too long! I can't figure what I am missing here.
Seems to me that the studded ones went on the drvr side, either side of the center exhaust ports. Used to bolt on the heat riser flange. There may have been one on the front pass side head to. Used to fasten the end of the battery ground cable to the block.

Yep, I got those on the driver's side. Two studs for the oil "deflectors" and two that you mentioned for the exhaust heat shroud.
Yes, I can see maybe the one studded bolt on the pass side for the bat cable, or maybe the dip stick? I haven't looked into that. I know the mounting tab connects somewhere in that area.
I don't know Pontiac motors like I do Chevy's, so I'm relying on my pre tear down pics and help form you guys. I wish I would have paid more attention to the these bolts!
I thought I saw a picture of a mounting tab of some sort. My original dipstick tube was bent all out of shape. Now that I think about it, I don't remember seeing a tap on the new one. I remember something in that area being secured by a bolt. Maybe it was the battery cable. Mine was attached to the front of the pass head, which I'm sure was wrong.
You've got an A/C equipped car, right? The upper dipstick tube has a tab that should go under the front valve cover bolt. Does the cast iron compressor pivot bracket bolt to the head? I think it does on my '67 and the front most one is a stud.

Yes, I do have AC. The AC bracket, maybe that's it. I'm going through my pics now to see if they show anything. Thanks!
Ibedamned! That's them! I sure don't remember that when I disassembled the motor. I wouldn't have thought it would have been designed with head bolts securing a bracket, but that's what the parts book shows.
But, you said your car has the stud up front? The catalog shows it to be the second one back.
Now I just need to see what attaches to the stud. Robert suggested the battery cable.
