Two more days of the phone ringing every 15 minutes. Thought of putting a note pad out jotting the names of every candidate that sent me a computer call, then make sure we do not vote for them. What a pina.
Putting yourself on the "Do not call list" works wonders!

Eliminating a home phone does wonders. Almost 10 years now without one and don't miss it at all! The ONLY calls I get are from people I want to hear from...
My land line's sole purpose is to provide a secure channel for the house alarm. Also works great for local calls.

The irony of the political calls we are getting is that my wife and I early voted over a week ago.
I do enjoy all the cellphone-only household stories since much of my career was working in that technology during its first 18 years. We knew it would be revolutionary.
I have stopped answering the land line...if no message left , no return call...and ONLY people I know get call backs...the rest...DELETE, DELETE,DELETE!
thinking of getting rid of land line, but its still a way for me to get my kids to turn on the computer fr a skype call...as my company 'office' cell phone doesnt call out of the country
I`m sick of all political calls and other 'beggars'
We used to have a land line before we sold our house and it was hooked up to an answering machine with caller ID and blocking abilities. Then we went without a land line for over a year while renting and looking for our next house. During that time we just used the cells. After we moved into our new house, we got another land line, and instantly the crappy political, sales, wrong number calls started up again. After one month of that, we cancelled our land line and only use our cells now. I will never go back to land lines. No more irritating calls, no more wrong numbers, no sales calls, no surveys, no politicians, and we save $50-60 per month. Why pay for a hassle..? In an emergency we have our cells, and internet (including wireless).

thats very similar to my thought about mail service...as I have been checking out moving to Panama (It may or may not happen , wife doesnt want to...lol) there they dont have mail delivery, you have to have a box at the post office (like Mail boxes etc )...so, NO TRASH MAIL! all that cr#p you get in the mail box every day....that looks ver enticing to me...almost worth moving for by itself! LOL
so, NO TRASH MAIL! all that cr#p you get in the mail box every day
My solution: I placed the recycle bin in the garage on the direct path from the mailbox to the house. Sorting is done during the walk up the driveway. About 10-20% of all mail actually makes it in the door and the rest wheeled back out to the street Tuesday night for the next leg of it's journey.

cant do that ,we have mail slot in the front door...its all on the floor in the entry...all the.....yup...all that.
I am going to cancel ours too when I get the new house....all I ever get on it is 6:00 pm solicitations while eating dinner, and for that I pay $40 a month ! ^#%$^%@

Just put your paper recycling bin right under the slot in the door...
Or better yet, get a new door without a slot. You can place a round trash can next to the door with a sign "place all junk mail in round container" with a big arrow.

may get a new house.....time to down grade , whenever I can convince the missus....then that may work....
in Sweden they have mail slots in most older apts and just about everyone has notices with " No advertising, please" and the mailmen have to adhere to that....lots of advetising coming back to post office...
How do we get that law passed here in the States. If you round my mail delivery to the nearest 5%, 100% of my mail is junk mail.
guess you got someone 'in power' to put it in a bill....congressman? I`d love to not have to throw out 85-90% of delivered stuff ea day...bet you`d get a good liason in mail men in such bill too.
My solution is real simple, everyone pays the same for mail delivery by weight. When it costs me more to mail a first class envelope than a junk flyer weighing 5 times as much, something is wrong. Make everyone pay the same and junk mail will go down drastically.
I have a good solution that stops junk mail, at least for awhile. Take the post paid return envelope and tape it to a paper wrapped brick. I wrap my bricks in brown craft paper. They have to pay the return postage no matter what it is. Have seen a significant drop in junk mail over the last 3 months and the post office is happy!

I also just learned a way to weed out the junk mail. There is a litte known way to have your mail held at the post office. This is not your typical "going on vacation" type of hold. This is where you fill out a change of address card and where you put your "new" address, you write in "general delivery" and you put the zip code of the post office where you want to collect your mail if and when you want to.
I did this since we lost our home and we are renting a house, I didn't want all the "junk" mail coming to our new address. So I asked the postmaster how I can basically stop receiving mail as we do EVERYTHING online and I don't want mail delivery. LOL Sounds crazy but I hate all the crap we get in the mail. I would say that 99% of what we get, I don't even open. Even all this crap that is coming about our mortgage situation being forged by the bank etc. Nothing will come of it anyway and I just don't want to even bother reading all the nonsense etc.
So far it's working out nice. In two months we collected our mail once and left everything but one letter right there at the post office... LOL
PS I look forward to the day when the USPS goes out of business. Just another segment of the gov. that is outdated and no longer needed. The ONLY thing that is keeping them going, well sort of, as they have been losing money for the last several years in a row, is junk mail.
How crazy is that, we have all these gov. employees keeping their jobs even though their "department" has been in the red for several years and they only thing they do is deliver junk. Only in American Gov. can that happen. If this was a private business it would have been closed YEARS ago!
or at least stopped delivering all the cr$p, thats not only bad for consumers, its bad for the mailmen (women) to deliver...its just trees (where are the greenies on this???)
But it is a proven fact that it is the junk mail that is keeping the post office in business. Altough actually there isn't even enough of that because they are operating in the red. Crazy concept. Like I said, only in our gov. could this continue year after year and nobody do anything about it. It's a simple solution. Pull the plug and let private companies make a go of it, IF they can. Seriously, who needs it?
All my billing is done via USPS, as do a lot of people still, not sure what they'd replace it with for similar service. We don't do online banking nor any direct withdrawl services, nor do we care to. We probably get 30-40 pieces of mail a week, about half are junk.
Doing away with Saturday delivery is fine by me though. Except when the HPP and PE magazines are due.
Wanting a Custom fit in an off the rack world.
I don't have time for a job, I just need the money.
I used to always send back the return envelopes empty, but really like the brick. Maybee we should use them to retur our garbage? I suppose it would stop then.
Well, once the non digital generation or the electronically challenged folks are all gone, then the USPS will go away. I personally just do not see a need for them anymore.
That will be a sad thing. I believe the USPS is one of the best run businesses that I know of. The organization must just be incredible. I am consistently amazed that someone can sent me a package or letter one day and I will get it either the next day or the day after. Sometimes all the way across the country and it only takes two to three days. I'm not big on the government companies but if the rest of the gov ran as effecient as the post office we'd be in alot better shape.
