Hello, I was wondering if anyone has comments on replacement windshield for 69' coupe ? I live down the street from NPD parts and was thinking it would be a good place to get one. they have two styles (green tint with sunshade) which is actually cheaper than the clear windshield by about $45. I believe all my other side glass, back glass is original and it is clear, would the green tint look out of place on the new windshield ? I was thinking about calling a local glass place to check their prices also.. just wondering how many companies manufacture 69' firebird coupe windhshields, could there be that many ?
67-69 F-body hardtop cars all used the same windshield. I got mine from a local guy for about $100. Mine is PPG but there is also another brand XYG commonly available but I preferred the PPG and it was the same price. You should call around locally.
Since there were options #531 Soft Ray Glass (all windows) $30.15 and #532 Soft Ray Glass (Windshield Only) $21.06, I assumed that there were two different windshields provided, the standard and the optional tinted. (1968 info)
thanks for the info. so would it look ok with a windshield that is 'green tint with blue sunshade' thats what NPD calls it (all the rest of the original factory windows are clear). that is cheaper than the 'clear without sunshade'.... or if i can find a local shop that has the PPG, etc... that would be good. just don't want the green tint to look out of place with all the rest factory clear original glass. thanks !
I bought locally , looked up "Discount Auto Glass, got a convert W/S, paid $140 installed myself, a friend in town bought one from same company, for his coupe got installed for $145, a couple of years ago...should be about the same price now
The tint is for cars with a/c,lots of cars have shaded windsheilds and clear glass. If you are building a showcar keep to what came in the car.if not I would go with the shaded winsheild, your eyes will thankyou in the summer time.Shaded windsheilds are cheaper because they make more than the clear.Go with ppg windshied they will fit better than the other ones.Just mine 2 cents.Bin in the trade for 30 years.Jim
thanks for the info. good points. i called NPD parts (because they're down the street from me) and asked about their 'green tinted w/ blue sunshade' glass for $145, they said it is 'overseas' so i guess that is not the good ones. Heartbeat city is another place not too far, they have both, overseas and USA glass. I believe the USA glass is $179. that is kindof pricey for me but it sounds like that is the best route. I am going to call around the 'discount' places as mentioned above to see if I can get some PPG glass for cheaper. maybe i'm making a big deal out of this but it makes me nervous, especially because i'm installing it myself, i can use all the help (better fit) possible. plus i would always prefer 'USA' over chinese stuff (i worked in china for 1 month in the auto parts field, and that place has a long way to go (alot of dirt floors) !!
just got off the phone with Henderson Glass (local shop), they said they will order one for me for $100 ! PPG made, tinted with the sunshade... I'm going for it, they'll have it in Friday !! Thanks guys !!
Let them install it. I did my first one myself and it really isn't that hard using butyl. When I cracked that one I called henderson glass and for $140 they put the next one in and it was a LOT better looking job. They line the outer edge of the windshield with a black primer so you don't see any of the glue or the edge of the windshild channel. I even had them pull my back glass and reinstall it cause it looked that much better.
good idea.. only problem is there is no windshield in now, and i don't have access to a trailer to take the car there. is it legal to drive a car on the road without a windshield ? i can see that, driving down the road with my sunglasses on. its like a convertible but more wind !! or do they install it at your house ?? i hear you on the expert doing it, my back window i installed and the butyl strip looks like crap, if you look inside the car at the back lower channel you can see the butyl and it is not consistent, looks messy.
They will come to your house and install it. I had them come to my business as the car was here for front end alignment. I have the number of a independant glass installer also if you can't get henderson to come out. This guy is a muscle car guy so he knows cars like ours. pm me if you want his number.
Yeah, you can drive it like that. You're only going one way right. What are the chances of getting pulled over anyway? Larry is right though have them install it and if you want to save the hassle have them comeout. Most of those guys do an awesome job. And fast too. Last windshield I bought for the bird was a lightweight WS. I swear it was a 1/3 the weight. I was a bit worried but 7years and still fine. BTW. They don't use the butyl rubber strip anymore. Most installer use a battery power caulking gun that has a special shaped tip. Lays it on there about 1/2"w and 3/4" tall. Nice straight lines.
