Does anyone have a "recipe" for a 455 with around 400hp or better with a good lopey idle? I have a 455 with a Performer intake and 6X heads..... that is all I know about the internals on this one.
Get Jim Hand's book "How to Build Max-performance Pontiac V8s" published by SA Designs. In the back, there are many "recipes" for performance builds, including a few that match your requirements. No reason to "re-invent the wheel" here.
Both Kaufmann and Butler have levels of "crate" engines on their sites that provide a few items of the "recipe" and the HP levels.
Or give one of them a call. I have heard both provide pretty good customer service on build-up questions.
Especially if you buy a couple parts off of them.
PS: my 455 (462) with off the shelf Edlebrock heads, a Performer intake, roller cam and headers puts out 490 HP and has one heck of a thumping cam lope.

Last Janary I had the 400 in my bird that was totaled stroked to a 461 w/Butler rotating assembly. Have yet to run it, but look forward to doing so. Stroker kits have become VERY reasonable!
