Just want to make sure I have most of what I need to install shifter and console. I have the console, shifter plate (have 2 of them, one slot is wider on the right and the other is wider on the left??), neutral safety switch and console harness ordered, shifter, U bracket. Some questions, how to install gear indicator in shifter plate (backing needed like 67 or no?). what covers the space on shifter hole, there is usually a black piece of plastic? If so how does it mount? What electric should be under the console, neutral switch, a light somewhere?anything else?
There is a black cover that rides over the shifter shaft and slides with the shifter. It is available from most of the major Firebird vendors. The gear shift indicator plate is lighted and sits on top of the left side of the shifter (it is covered when you install the "cover"). You need the wiring harness to the light which includes a lamp socket and ground which attaches to the shifter. The wiring should run under the carpet covering the trans tunnel and then back up by the shifter.
I am not sure about the neutral safety switch - I think it is part of the key/column switch. Maybe one of the ATM guys can address this.
Most of that above is correct, however the console wiring harness runs along the underside of the console through several plastic covered hooks - not under the carpet
The '67 and '68 neutral switches connect to the console wiring harness.
