I'm pulling my original AC components in the engine compartment off of my 68 bird and was wondering if a standard heater box would bolt in it's place. I'd like to use the vents and heater sometimes. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
The non-A/C heater box for the firewall side will not fit. The holes for the heater core are different and the rectangular hole for the unit itself is different. The inside heater portion is different on the A/C car as well - also due to the difference in heater cores.
If you are set on removing the A/C box on the firewall side, then you can always weld in a plate to cover the holes in the firewall and not run any type of heater or you could install a Vintage Air System.
If you decide to go ahead and remove the A/C box with evaporator on the firewall side, I will buy them from you. I am missing that on my recently purchased '69 convertible.
Thanks guys. I'll check those ideas out. Trmjr1 - I will be hanging on to the AC stuff in case I decide to put it back in someday. If I hear of anything though I'll let you know.
On my son's firebird, we bought a fan box for a "heater only" car and cobbled together an "adaptor" to mate it to the firewall. Believe it or not, it doesn't look all that bad (imho).
If you're not looking for something necessarily "show quality," it wasn't too hard.
I can't figure out how to attach a picture, but if you want one I can email it to you.

Whwrite - yes if you cold send a picture to firebird_fast@yahoo.com that would be great. Thanks. Do the heater and vents work?
I saw in this month's HPP a GTO where they put a stainless steel plate over the hole where the heater core is. They did a nice job, so it looked good, but as trmjr1 said, that would elimninate any use of the heater and vents.
