I have a 67 400 car, 4spd factory traction bars, the motor is not original and it has a block id of c137307 y4 that didn't thrill me at all, i think its a 73 block that had only 185 hp or so. Next i checked the heads and they are 48 and date code is 0319? i think these are 1969 350 H.O heads am i correct? and how do you read the date code? Is this a good set up??
Depending on the cam, it's probably a good combination. Hopefully those are actually 400 heads - which would mean Ram Air 3 heads. That allows you to run on pump gas and still get a decent 9.2 to 9.5 CR.
you don't want high compression 350 heads on a 400 for street use. However, Jim Hand's page shows the #48 as a '69 400 RAIII head, which are listed as 72 cc, and with stock bore, pistons, and gasket calcs out to 9.88:1.
Year Engine Hp Code Valve Misc 1969 400 330,335,350,366HP 16,62,48(MT) 2.11/1.77 72cc 1969 350 325HP 48 2.11/1.77 10.5 c.r.
excellant heads!! if you want to know what year the block is, pull the distributor and look for a stamping tword the drivers side of the dist. hole. it will be a letter and 2 or 3 numbers. the first letter is the month a= january b = feb c = march ect. the center number or two is the day of the month, and the final digit is the year. but beibg that it is only one number, you have to guess what year. if it is a 7 , that means it is either a 67 or 77 block.
You could pull the heads and have the chambers CC'd to find out if they are the 72cc version. Does the engine run now? Does it ping pretty bad on pump gas? If not they are more than likely the 400 heads.
