If you run around at 5k revs all day every day, yes you will need some type of protection, if you cruise a couple thousand miles a year, you should be fine. Rebuilt my motor in 92'(didn't use hardened seats) and have about 40k on it now and runs great.
Don't forget the ZDDP additive in the oil as well.
