Hi everyone, It's been a long time since I've been on here, but I have my '67 Firebird back and ready to be reassembled, so I should be on actively for a while again. I am trying to decipher which engine I have - the car does not have its original engine. I've gotten the block casting # off the back, and it's 9799914. After researching, that shows this being a '70 400 block, but it is a YD code, which doesn't gel with the block casting #. Seems like the 9799914 blocks are supposed to have YB, YE, YS or YZ codes. Can anyone help me with this conflict? Any ideas? Thanks!
I've got that same engine as my "spare". It still has the 16 heads and 2 bbl carb. That casting # is the same as the Ram Air 3 block. I would think that our blocks are 2 bolt mains, but drilled for 4 bolt mains. Are you going to be rebuilding this engine? I would love to know if these non RA blocks are drilled for 4 bolt mains...

Thanks for all the helpful posts! When I purchased the car 3 years ago, I was told it was a mid 70's 455 block. I am really happy to hear that I have a 400 since my car is an original 400 car. Not that it makes it correct or anything...just my call-out emblems will be accurate.
Kyle - eventually, I do plan on rebuilding this engine. It'll probably be next winter's project. It runs really good now and is still in the car, so I wanted to assemble the car, try to enjoy it during the summer and then see about breaking her down after that. I'll probably be extremely active on here when I do rebuild the engine since the folks on this site have a lot of knowledge and are willing to assist with advice. Quite honestly, I'm a bit curious myself. Maybe someone else has torn down a 9799914? I'll definitely keep you informed when I find out.
Maybe someday I'll pop that oil pan off... It's sitting on the garage floor with the auto trans still attached. I've got a 6 month old daughter now so tring to find time.......

Congrats on the daughter! We have a 7.5 month old son, so I know exactly what you mean about finding the time. Spare time is as precious as our boy is....well, not quite, but you know what I mean.
