Hey all, Its been a while since I've posted, but my search for a 67-68 V8 firebird 4spd hasn't stopped. I located one in NY thats seems like a really nice car. The info that I have is below:
67 firebird don't have vin yet transferable title 400 pontiac motor, not original bored 30 over, w/cams 4spd trans, not original Motor runs well no trans problems complete good interior complete good body solid floor pans, trunk pan, rockers, window cowls, frame, and firewall

I will post pictures in a few minutes!
Any suggestions on price with the info above? Assuming nothing special pops up...whats a great price?

Im glad you two agree. I thought anything over 10 was too much. One thing to keep in mind is that I do not want a show car. It doesn't bother me if the car is not original because I don't care to make money off of the car. I would like for it to be a good, solid, reliable car that I can drive and not worry about any major issues. That being said...this car fits the description but I think the seller just paid too much for it when they bought it. thanks again...I'll try to work on the seller some more
Remember that car is 43 years old. Odds are your NOT going to just jump in it and drive with no issues. Plan on putting some time and money into it. That being said, I agree with the others on the price range.
In order to get the price down it would help if you find any issues. If your not capable to do it hire a company that specializes on finding all the potential issues.
You need to verify each body panel for rust and the drive train for condition.
Take it to a mechanic to check engine, suspension etc. and get under it and get some picks of everything under neath it.

If I can get the seller closer to my price range I will give the car a thorough check. At this point I'd like to try to determine the cars value before I take the trip. This is a modified car but seems as tho it was done tastefully. I have some more info and am awaiting even more:
Originally a 400 motor, but not the original motor in it has factory in-dash tach Non-AC car Side exhaust pipes
I will post the rest of the info when I get it. If I can use the raw facts about the equipment in the car to lower his price that would be great. Then I can visit it and check out the condition. Thanks
Yellowbird, Thats exactly the kind of info I need to get the price down...seller says the tach is a good option to have and raises value, but I can claim its not original and doesnt add value. Would you say it decreases value? If it was originally a 400 car it should have a 400 hood with the tach in hood right? He also says the tach doesnt work...maybe it never did, maybe they switched the dash because the speedo broke or something and the replacement had the tach... thanks I am awaiting a call from the seller today to get more info about the car. Anyone have any important questions I might add to my list?
Hood tachs were an option for all fgf's. You could get a 400 without a hood tach. (gee, who has one like that??)
My 400 also has deluxe interior without a console. Don't see too many that way either.
If he claims he has an original dash tach, I'd like to see a picture of it. I can't imagine where it is placed.

He didnt claim it was original...just that it was a desirable option...the seller knows very little about Firebirds and admits that. All he knows is that he paid 13k for a well running classic muscle car. The car was restored to be a good looking driver. I also noticed there are firebird emblems on the rear quarter panels...it looks like the same emblem on the front fenders. Not sure what thats all about. Like I said, when I hear back from the seller I'm gonna ask a bunch of questions and get some more info...if I can convince him to come down into my price range (7k-10k) I'll make the trip to see the car and give it a good mechanical check. At this point, 12K seems to be a bit too much for this car.

Argh! Knock 5k off just for that. You'll be wondering what other 'nice features' like this you'll find along the way.

Got the vin: 223377u135373 I don't think the owner is willing to go hunting around for engine codes and trans codes etc., but I would like to know more about this car. Is there any other info I can get about its original equipment from this vin? Without getting PHS documents that is.
The VIN tells you it is a '67 Firebird coupe built in Lordstown OH with a V8. The trim tag tells more.
It's not originally a 400 car, it's a 326 car. It has been worked on by one or more owners with little concern for doing things to original or professional repair standards. It has manual drum brakes. The wheels are not a good fit for the car. The side dump exhaust is cheesy. It looks like a mid '80s "hotrodder" build. The Firebird script on the rear quarters is just odd...and to remove them and plug the holes and match the paint will be $$.
This does not mean the car is not worthy of consideration; merely that your expectations and wallet should match what is offered. I would consider this car to be a daily fair weather driver, and would pay accordingly. The "value" as a collector car is reduced by the Camaro spoiler, aftermarket coil and cooling parts under the hood, sloppy wiring and workmanship. You'll spend time and money to make this car a good and reliable driver, but as long as the major mechanicals are in good shape, the cost should be reasonable.
I'd say $7-8K if sound. Look hard for hidden rust and repair areas.

In my honest opinion, with a starting asking price such as his, and the condition of the car, I'd keep looking and never look back. Way too many issues with that one. FWIW

68tpls400, I'm not too concerned about the modifications to the car as long as they do not compromise performance. I am going to speak with the seller later today and make him an off early next week. If he rejects, that will be it.
1) A 400 hood (w/hood scoops) 2) Filler panels over the space between the core support and the front bumper area 3) 400 emblem in the front bumper 4) "Hockey" sticks located on the front grille 5) 400 emblem on the rear deck lid

Wovenweb, thanks for the great info...these are all good reasons to bring down the price. I'm sure the seller doesn't know all of these details. Is it correct to say that this car was "most likely" not a 400. How would I know for sure, the body tag wouldn't give that info, and the drivetrain has been changed. thanks

As Wovenweb stated, there are several details not present on this car that would indicate an original 400 car or cloned 400 car. This car has none.
The cowl tag of the '67 provides much info.

I was a bit disappointed that they did not continue with the same level of detail for the trim tags in later years as they did in '67.

That is a fact on the other GM cars I own or have owned as well. GTO is the same issue and Camaro the same deal. Must have been a corporate decision. Vikki, do ALL 400 cars from ALL plants show the '3F' designation in 1967 that you know of?

Both numbers matching. My first love was a Cameo White 67 326 Coupe, bought back in 1983, at the age of 17, for $1,200. Been hooked since on PONTIAC! JDilullo there is or was a Firebird on Ebay that was a 'classified' as listing. I think it was a california car and was a 67 HO coupe - kind of a survivor. Here is the listing so copy and paste it in your browser. We wants 8 grand for it and it does look like a great starting point from what I can see. I would NEVER, and mean NEVER pop on a so-called '400' or 'HO' car without ordering the PHS report since the seller is looking for a premium for that rare option and without the insurance of a PHS report you could be taking a smackdown. If you want a 326 car or something the PHS is not as relevant before you buy it. This car is worth all the money compared to that other-

All 1967 Firebirds that were built with the 400 engine will display 3F on the trim tag if the trim tag/body are a matched set. You can visit the trim tag decoder on this site for more info.
unclesamscandy, That car you linked to does look pretty nice. The biggest issues for me are 1) its auto and I'd like to avoid the conversion to stick as well as destroying the originality of the car and 2) I would like a car with black interior. Thank you for taking the time to post this link. Everyone else, thanks for the great info and tips...I am having difficulty getting info from the seller because I have been very busy but should have body tag info tonight. I will post the info as soon as I can. Thanks again.
Ok everyone...got more info so its time to really rip into this car and figure out what it is. He only gave me 4 numbers from the body tag.
Body Tag: 67-22437, 253-Z, E2E8G, LOR13737 Non-AC Manual windows Manual drum brakes Power steering No rear defroster Aftermarket wheels Non original interior, but great condition Black interior, front bucket seats Aftermarket radio
Any info about th above items would be greatly appreciated. I will then make a list of pros and cons to discuss with the seller. Thanks again everyone! James
253 is standard black interior with bucket seats. I would guess the Z is really a 2, for black vinyl top. The LOR is Lordstown assembly plant, sequence # 13737.
e seems to indicate A/C, but I'm guessing it means something else.
All in all, a rather plain fgf. Nothing special. See below:

Stumbled across these posts and as much as I enjoy all of the help I am getting putting together the 68 coupe I purchased....I can't believe a first gen firebird existed with the list of "must haves" for what he was looking to spend.....
