I am in the process of finally completing all the things I wanted to do on my 68 Firebird convertible. Next up is the leaf springs, any suggestions? Best place to get them, does it matter if 4 or 5 leaf?
firebrid ?? I believe that the 4 leaf are the "correct" ones. I have 5 leaf on mine and it sits up real good and that's how I like it. Because originally the birds sorta sagged in the back. I think the best place to get them from would be eaton spring here in Detroit, Mi They do have a website. That's where year one gets 'em from. I just pulled mine this past year and had them all powdercoated they look good.
My '68 has five leafs, each of various length. I suspect it is original but I can't say for sure. They are saggy now and need to be re-arched or re-placed.
the diff. between the 4 and 5 leaf are the ride. the 4 leafs are thicker leafs that ride stiffer. the five ride softer, but are thinner plates than the 4 leafs. therefore the 5 leaf will sag sooner than the four leaf. both springs have the same thickness in the center. - just so u know info.
its cheaper to re arch...find a spring company in yellow pages...I`ve used Heitman here in Houston, not sure wh`os doing it in Dallas.... you might call Heitman and ask, they may know competition in Dallas...713-675-9001 is their number....I used them on my 57 Studebaker to rearch my springs...on my Firebird I found out someone had installed Ford springs! , so I replaced w a set of new...from Classic...but later found out you can find them cheaper than classic.
