Can anyone point me towards a place that sells these or something equivalent that fit a 69 with a 400? I dont want to reuse the old mounts when I put my motor back in and I want strong mounts to really tie that motor to the chassis. I have looked everywhere and can't find anyone that sells them.
Poly motor mounts are a bad idea in quite a few cars due to increased vibration. I have no idea if a 400 Firebird is a good recipient for poly. Does anyone know?
All I can say is that I have been driving a fgf since 1977 with about 600k miles driven in one. I have beaten the dog crap out of it--tore up one rear, 3trannies, and 5 engines. Never once have I had a mount fail, and I have never heard of anyone breaking a mount. First, fgf cars don't hook up well enough so that it's a problem. Second, it's a Pontiac, not mopar, so broken mounts aren't a problem.
Oh yeah, I drove 2 mopars, with much less @$$ than the firedog, and I broke numerous engine mounts. My bother had a 340 Deamon--it was all right, but it wasn't all that--and he finally chained the engine down because he couldn't keep mounts in it.
I have seen mounts drilled and sleeved, and then bolted together for a semi-solid mount. Seemed decent enough.
If you still have rubber subframe bushings, and rubber trans mount, vibration would be minimal, I would think.
I was under the impression that poly, while less deflective or susceptible to oil, shears over time, and so does not last as long as rubber. I could be wrong.
The only place I know of that would have them if they were available is energysuspension. They dont appear to list any
I looked around for a while and didn't find any. I decided to just put back stock rubber and find some later. Don't let something like that stop your project, rubber ones are cheap($10 for a pair I think). Solid body mounts don't add that much to the ride. My son's must GT rides like a truck compared to my bird.
The stock mounts that I have are in decent condition so I guess I'll have to re-use them. I am just a little concerned about movement in the drivtrain with a lot of horsepower transmitting through the stock mounts.
Hey just to add another question on this topic, my car came with a 6 cyl and it is now getting a 400, but i forget how the motor mounts are, i am familiar with chev how they are steel but where are they rubber? if anyone has pics that would be the best thanks Nick
go to http://www.partsamerica.com/ and type in 2254 in their search, then click on "Anchor 2254" and it should give you a pic. I think this is the right one, but not positive. They list none, or the wrong one, for your car. It looks like the 6cy mount, only not as wide.
The metal frame brackets come up, and a bolt goes thru the center hole from the bottom to keep the mount fastened to the frame bracket. The rubber is sandwiched in the mount, which bolts to the engine thru the two ears.
That's the # that anchor lists on their site... 2254. They list the wrong one for the 6cy though
ps the frame brackets will be different than the 6, or the SBC brackets.
thanks, now i understand a bit more how they are just need to find a set now! i have the set from the lemans which i doubt would work, anybody have a set they want to sell?thanks Nick
