I thought I purchased a 68 firebird auto shifter a yr ago (console/floor, t handle). I am having someone install it and he thinks it may be a 69 shifter but is not sure. I think the problem is the neutral safety switch does not have a bracket to mount it to. I purchased the neutral safety switch from ames, 363p and the book says '68 a/t console' but my guy who maybe does not see many, says its a column switch. Checked other vendors and it looks the same. How can you prove I have the right switch and shifter?
Here is the deal, after speaking to the guy doing the work. He now agree's the shifter and maybe the neutral safety switch are correct BUT the linkage for the neutral safety switch is missing from the shifter? The piece that slides along switch? He suggests getting a complete 68 shifter, sound right? If so, anyone have one they want to part with?
Figured this mess out, seems I had a 68 shifter all along but it was missing the neutral safety switch linkage and the top metal piece that holds the indicator and has clips for console plate. Took awhile but with your help, mission accomplished. I am on the trail of a complete shifter, thanks.
