Im having a hard time getting the pitman arm off of my 68. The box is numbered 5691676, which I believe is a Saginaw box?? The arm is the type with the joint mounted in it and I just wanted to get it off so I could bead-blast and recoat it while I have everything disassembled. I havent tried heating it up cuz I wasnt sure if Id damage anything or if itd even help. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Charlie
Oh I got the joint loose, and I did try a puller on the arm but it was under EXTREME tension, and it didnt budge a bit. Was so tight I felt like I was about to break something.
Were you using a pitman arm puller, or a regular 2-3 jaw puller? Unless the rod is digging into the sector shaft, the only thing likely to break is the puller itself. Wear saftey goggles... and a cup
I have always had good luck with my cheep (less tha $20.00) pitman arm puller, I always let them soak overnight with some PB blaster, then you just have to work on it slowly, Don't over tension the puller, when you feel it is tight, tap (and I mean tap!!!! not a full swing with a sledge hammer) the bolt end portion of the puller with a hammer, you should then be able to tighten the puller alittle more, and repeat as nessisary. And it is always a good idea to wear goggles and steel toes.
