It comes attached to the shaft. You have to remove the shaft and the knob. Which means you have to get your hand up next to the switch and push a button on the side of the light switch and pull out the shaft and knob with the button depressed.
So if you are just changing out the knob itself, you pretty much need to twist or break the old one off.

Thanks for your help . I found this out after posting this . I bought two knobs at a swap meet . Apparently on an A body you can just change the knob , but not on our F body . Thanks again
