30 May 11 - "Vikings arrived in Greenland in the 980s, during a warm period like the present," says this article on Reuters. A warm period such as today's! Does that mean that we're not experiencing "unprecedented" global warming as the would-be dictators at the United Nations would have us believe? The Viking settlers flourished. But then came a cold snap in Greenland in the 12th century. This cold snap may help explain why the Vikings vanished from the island, says a new study in the U.S. journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Average temperatures plunged 4 degrees Celsius (7F) in a period of only 80 years beginning about 1100, says William D'Andrea of Brown University, lead author of the study. That would be like having today's average temperatures in Edinburgh, Scotland, tumble to match those in Reykjavik, Iceland, said D'Andrea. It would be a huge setback to crop and livestock production. "Conflicts with indigenous Inuit, a search for better hunting grounds, economic stresses and natural swings in climate, perhaps caused by shifts in the sun's output or volcanic eruptions, could all be factors," the article continues. "The study also traced even earlier swings in the climate to the rise and fall of pre-historic peoples on Greenland." Did you catch that? "Natural swings in climate, perhaps caused by shifts in the sun's output or volcanic eruptions, could all be factors." Does this mean that maybe, just maybe, climate change could be a natural phenomenon? And did you notice that even earlier swings in climate can be linked to the rise and fall of pre-historic peoples on Greenland? These climate swings have nothing to do with human activity. We're just a gnat on the back of a giant. We're the hobo standing on top of the engine. It may look like we're driving the train, but we're just along for the ride. It's a cycle, it's a cycle, it's a cycle! See entire article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110530/sc_nm/us_climate_greenland
1 June 11 - "An eminent Mexican geophysicist says that the world may be on the verge of an eighty-year cold period similar to the 'little ice age' experienced by Europe from 1300 to 1800 A.D.," says this article by Matthew Hoffman.
Sunspot activity since 1990 NASA "Víctor Manuel Velasco, of the University of Mexico's Institute of Geophysics, says that recent winter conditions are similar to those of the 'little ice age', and in particular the 'Maunder Minimum,' a period during which sunspot activity dropped significantly," says Hoffman. "The geophysicist believes that a "mini ice age" began in 2010 which will last between 60 and 80 years," according to a University of Mexico press release describing his views. "We are talking about the period between 1645 and 1715, which is known as the Maunder Minimum, a period in which the sunspots practically disappeared from the surface of the sun, and in which our planet occupied a position similar to which it has today, with respect to the center of gravity of our [solar] system." Velasco said in an interview published by the university.
The fact that the Earth is in a similar position today in relation to the rest of the solar system as it was during the Maunder Minimum is significant for climate, says Velasco. Velasco is one of many scientists who question the conclusions of the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). "It will be nature that demonstrates which theory is the correct one," says Velasco. "However, the Earth is getting colder." ++++++++++++++++++++ Alaskan glacier advancing 10 feet per day Largest tidewater glacier in North America
Could block entrance to Russell Fjord
Hubbard Glacier north of Yakutat crept to within 100 yards of Gilbert Point in June of 2007. George Kalli of the US Army Corp of Engineers took this photo in May 2007.
7 Jun 11 - "Haven't heard any news about the largest tidewater glacier in North America this year," says reader Phil Peterson. "I was able to check after not being able to access the site for many months."
"Three months ago Hubbard glacier was about 410 meters away from Gilbert point, says Peterson. "It is now about 120 meters away from blocking the entrance to Russell Fjord."
You won't hear this in the main stream media. (a large advancing glacier)
Thanks for your website and all the info you provide! You are doing a great service for the country.
Phil Peterson Chalfont, PA
Confirmed: Largest tidewater glacier in North America advancing 10 feet per day After I received this email from Phil, I decided to check it out.
Phil is absolutely correct. The largest tidewater glacier in North America is advancing 10 feet (3.1 meters) per day - and not a peep from the main-stream media.
Three months ago Hubbard glacier was about 410 meters away from Gilbert point. It is now about 120 meters away - the length for a football field - from blocking the entrance to Russell Fjord. And it has been advancing for a long time.
Chart from US Army Cold Regions Research & Engineering Lab - http://glacierresearch.org/ The measuring instruments are not at the very edge of Gilbert Point. Therefore, when the glacier reaches the red line on the chart, that's when it will close Russell Fjord.
According to the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Hubbard Glacier has been thickening and advancing since scientists first measured it in 1895. It has also dammed Russell Fjord before. "After the glacier dammed the fiord in 1986, the new Russell Lake rose 83 feet above sea level before the ice-and-gravel dam broke," says science writer Ned Rozell. It damned it again in 2002. In 2002, Russell Lake reached 49 feet above sea level before the dam burst and the water rejoined the ocean with a flood 30 percent greater than the largest measured flow of the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge, says Rozell. In the photo at right, a narrow trickle of water flows from the channel between Hubbard Glacier (on left) and the base of Gilbert Point (right). Disenchantment Bay is in the foreground.
US Forest Service photo, 2002
Could create a huge glacial lake "'When' and 'if' the Hubbard Glacier eventually closes the Russell Fjord, the fjord will fill with fresh water, becoming a 30-mile-long lake creating a new 40,000-cubic-feet-per-second river system," says climatologist Cliff Harris. "This will have an extremely 'negative' economic impact on Yakutat and the surrounding regions."
This would be like a modern-day Glacial Lake Missoula, but on a smaller scale.
According to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, the new Russell Lake would overtop at about 132 feet, whereas Glacial Lake Missoula filled to a depth of about 1100 feet and contained as much water as Lake Erie and Lake Ontario combined. So let me say it again. The largest tidewater glacier in North America is advancing 10 feet (3.1 meters) per day. At that rate it could close Russell Fjord this summer. And not a peep from the main-stream media.
To check the rates of advance for yourself, go to: http://glacierresearch.org/ Go to: real time data, Hubbard Glacier, monitoring data, - in the window for 'Number of Days' type 90. Reload the chart and check out the advance rate since March 5th.!!!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Summer snow in Hawaii
Winter weather advisory in effect
Photo credit: University of Hawaii Hilo
5 Jun 11 - "Saturday’s storm dropped several inches of snow on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, a relatively rare sight in June." says this article in the Hawaii Star Advertiser.
"A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. today. More snow, sleet or freezing rain could affect travel to the summits, forecasters said.
"Park rangers reported up to 8 inches of snow on the road, the weather service said."
A foot of new snow in French Alps Buries bedding plants and lettuce
7 Jun 11 - "It was rather a shock to wake this morning (June 1st) and see nearly a foot of snow. How very bizarre our weather has been all this year. It not so unusual to see a little snow at some point during the spring or summer months, but 30cm is unheard of.
"We woke to an eerie noise of cracking all around the valley this morning as over-laden boughs snapped from trees. Lithe silver birches are so heavy with snow that they are bent double and touching the ground, but the less-bendy sycamores are all badly damaged with severed boughs on the ground everywhere. Snow has pulled down the electric sheep fences too. "This morning I found a couple of patous (sheep guarding dogs) in my garden, having escaped from their field during the night – goodness knows where their sheep have gone. But most upsetting is the snow on my tender bedding plants and lettuces, now a foot deep in powder."
Bedding plants buried under a foot of snow! This why I keep saying to stock up on food.
Bjorn, I recall that you are familiar with Trail Ridge Road from the Cannonbird Run.
The snow there was so deep this winter that the road just opened this week (a week later than normel) for the first time this year and they say it was the most snow this late in the past 30 years.
Last week, (June 2) my daughter was up to the point where the road was still closed off. She sent me this picture.
On WLS radio today, they had Dr. David Evans, a former climate scientist. Having six college degrees and years in working in Australia's government climate science group, he has gone from being a man-made global warming believer to realizing it is a hoax. He discussed the bogus data being used and total lack of objective scientific methodology.
Here's one of his quotes from another interview: "The whole idea that carbon dioxide is the main cause of the recent global warming is based on a guess that was proved false by empirical evidence during the 1990s. But the gravy train was too big, with too many jobs, industries, trading profits, political careers, and the possibility of world government and total control riding on the outcome. So rather than admit they were wrong, the governments, and their tame climate scientists, now outrageously maintain the fiction that carbon dioxide is a dangerous pollutant."
It's covered on both ends...1970's global cooling...now warming...both mean higher taxes, less industry, and government control... What major breakthru in predicting the weather have we accomplished since? Need only to look at the cylical weather pattern of years past...
Climategate - A 'Hockey-Stick of Errors' By Climatologist Cliff Harris
14 Jun 11 - On November 20, 2009, an unnamed climate scientist released more than four thousand private e-mails and climate-related files on the Internet.
Most of these highly embarrassing internal documents came from the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom, headed by Professor Phil Jones.
Those of us who long suspected that the CRU and other anthropogenic global warming (AGW) alarmists had ‘cooked up’ falsified historical climate data to support a predetermined conclusion, were finally able to look at the scientists ‘hidden agenda.’
For many years, AGW scientists had refused to share much of their research data relating to global warming. The CRU and the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) each did everything possible to deny past periods of global warming and cooling that took place on this planet between 600 B.C. and 1850 A.D.
By extreme contrast, Randy Mann, Bob Felix and I have shared our detailed long-term charts and graphs frequently with our subscribers over the past couple of decades.
These charts of ours (and other scientists) detail several periods of warming and cooling during the past 2,600 years.
The Roman Warm Period between 250 B.C. and 450 A.D. and the Medieval Warm Period of 900 A.D. and 1300 A.D. each produced widespread prosperity in the world. Remember, WARM TIMES ARE ‘GOOD TIMES,’ CO2 or not.
By extreme contrast, however, the harsh Dark Ages Cold Period, that extended from 535 A.D. to approximately 900 A.D., saw a dramatic decline in living conditions through Europe and Asia. Crops failed, which led to disease and famine, and the average European lifespan decreased by nearly 20 years!
The so-called ‘Little Ice Age,’ which occurred from 1350 to 1850 A.D. wiped out the mighty Vikings, who were previously farming Greenland during the Medieval Warm Period as well as the advanced Incan civilization in the mountains of Peru that likewise flourished during warmer times.
Asia, Europe and North America saw massive economic, social and health-related hardships, especially during the ‘heart’ of the Little Ice Age around the ‘Maunder Minimum’ (extremely low sunspot activity) between 1645 and 1715, when the Thames River in London froze on an annual basis.
My own exhaustive climate research shows that the earth does not maintain a ‘static’ climate. It’s always changing. Our sun is the major influence on our planet’s climate at any given time, as I pointed out last week. It’s getting active again, hence a new trend towards a bit warmer temperatures in the near-term, a naturally occurring cycle, especially in the eastern U.S. and southwestern Europe.
My biggest complaint with the AGW scientists is that their climate models tend to ignore the past significant changes on the planet.
For example, University of Virginia Professor Michael Mann’s ‘hockey-stick graph’ is a climatological ‘joke,’ in my not so humble opinion. It shows a very stable climate on a global scale between 1000 A.D. and 1980 A.D. followed by a huge warmup in the past 30 years since 1981.
Many of these ‘Climategate’ e-mails exposed Mann’s statistical errors in his hockey-stick graph. He completely ignored the 11-year cooling period between 1998 and 2009 that almost wiped-out the warming cycle of 1981 to 1998 in the mid-latitudes.
Mann was told by Professor Phil Jones in a November 2009 e-mail, "not to leave stuff lying around that would point out his many climate errors."
Canadian climate scientists, Ross McKitrick and Steve McIntyre, have completely discredited Mann’s ‘hockey-stick’ graph. To me, it’s just a "cracked puck in the weeds."
Only a few dozen climate scientists still support the AGW cause. At least 32,000 climate scientists worldwide, approximately 9,000 holding PhD’s, now believe that the ‘theory of catastrophic global warming’ is not supported by scientific evidence over the ages. Carbon dioxide does not heat the planet.
Like me, they also believe that carbon dioxide (CO2) is a beneficial substance for both plants and animals, not a pollutant like carbon monoxide or sulfur dioxide.
Next week, what about Al Gore’s claims of "rising sea levels" that may eventually swamp New York City, New Orleans and San Francisco? Stay tuned.
Several years ago, climatologist Cliff Harris teamed up with meteorologist Randy Mann to form Harris-Mann Climatology. They provide a daily commodity and weather service for traders, farmers, and anyone who has an interest in the markets. According to their website, Harris has been rated as one of the top commodity traders in the country.

ASA scientist accused of advocating global warming
to enrich himself
Accused of receiving more than $1.2 million
22 Jun 11 - A top NASA scientist who once claimed the Bush administration tried to "silence" his global warming claims is now accused of receiving more than $1.2 million from the very environmental organizations whose agenda he advocated, says this article on Fox news. In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Washington, D.C., a group claims NASA is withholding documents showing that James Hansen failed to comply with ethics rules and financial disclosures regarding substantial compensation he earned outside his $180,000 taxpayer-paid position as director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies. The lawsuit claims Hansen privately profited from his public job in violation of federal ethics rules, and that NASA allowed him to do it because of his influence in the media and celebrity status among environmental groups, which rewarded him handsomely the last four years. $1.2 million in "gifts, speaking fees, prizes and consulting compensation" ... and we're supposed to believe this guy?
Did anyone else see today that the US (along with other nations) is releasing some of it's oil reserve to refiners, to influence the price of oil? How bad of an idea is this?
It's not that bad due to the fact it will reaffirm the fact Obama has no clue what he is doing and doesn't belong in the White House.
I hear ya. Hell of a way to do it though. I always thought the reserve was for real emergencies (like the Saudis shutting off the oil supply during a war for example).
We have opened the reserves in recent years. I think the last time we did W. was at the helm and he was trying to reduce the over inflated costs. At this point I think this situation does relate to the re-election run. Not a good idea to do this when oil prices had fallen below $100 and the prices at the pump were slowly following. Key word, slowly!!!

25 Jun 11 - "Former Democratic Sen. Tim Wirth of Colorado, now the president of the UN Foundation, said the flooding and forest fires in the United States this year are evidence of "the kind of dramatic climate impact" climate change models have predicted and that global warming spokesmen must “undertake an aggressive program to go after those who are among the deniers” of climate change," says this article on CNS news.
This despicable suggestion comes just one week after US solar physicists announced that the Sun appears to be headed into a lengthy spell of low activity, which could mean that the Earth – far from facing a global warming problem – is actually headed into a mini Ice Age. That announcement came from scientists at the U.S. National Solar Observatory (NSO) and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). At a press conference held at the annual meeting of the Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society in Las Cruces, New Mexico, three solar scientists gave their forecast for the next solar cycle, that the sun may be going into hibernation. Cycle 24 may be the last normal one for some time," said solar physicist Dr Frank Hill, "and the next one, Cycle 25, may not happen. The solar cycle may be going into hiatus, like a TV show." This would be similar to the late 17th century when the Sun went through a period of inactivity known as the Maunder Minimum. Very few sunspots were seen from about 1645 to 1715, which corresponds to a climatic period called the "Little Ice Age." Does Mr. Wirth want to “undertake an aggressive program" to go after scientists at the U.S. National Solar Observatory and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory?
I guess he's hoping that people will be too stupid to notice that the historic Missouri River flood is occurring because of record-breaking snowpack in the mountains - snowpack that is two times, three times, even five times normal. Get your finger out of my face, Mr. Wirth.

Too much snow at Sunrise will delay campground opening until at least July 8. National Park Service photos.
3 Jul 11 - "Scientists think Britain and Europe could be in for a chilly few years predicting a 'Little Ice Age' could be on its way," says an article today on Mail Online.
According to the study led by Mike Lockwood, professor of space environment physics at Reading University, the average winter temperature in Britain could drop below 2.5C (36.5F) compared to the average winter now of 5C (41F).
This drop in temperature would be caused by a decline in sunspot activity.
Lockwood's discoveries mirror three different studies announced just last month from heavyweight scientists at the US National Solar Observatory, at NASA, and at the US Air Force Research Laboratory, which concluded that sunspot activity looks set to decline over the next 10 years.
Those three studies found that sunspots, the enormous magnetic storms that erupt on the sun's surface during what is called the sunspot cycle, might not be as abundant as normal or might even disappear entirely for the first time since the Maunder Minimum, almost 400 years ago.
During the Maunder Minimum, sunspots disappeared from sight and Europe endured unusually harsh winters now known as the Little Ice Age.
According to the renowned British climatologist H. H. Lamb, Britain's rainy season lasted a few weeks longer in the spring and began a few weeks earlier in the fall during the Little Ice Age. This prevented farmers from planting their crops at the proper time, prevented them from harvesting the crops at the proper time, or at all, and literally millions of people died of starvation.
NASA on the Maunder Minimum:
"Early records of sunspots indicate that the Sun went through a period of inactivity in the late 17th century. Very few sunspots were seen on the Sun from about 1645 to 1715.... This period of solar inactivity also corresponds to a climatic period called the "Little Ice Age" when rivers that are normally ice-free froze and snow fields remained year-round at lower altitudes. There is evidence that the Sun has had similar periods of inactivity in the more distant past."
Professor Lockwood's team looked at the sun's activity of the past 9,300 years using Met Office data.
Their findings, which were presented at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society's solar physics division and published by the Institute of Physics, "showed that in the next 50 years there is a one in 10 chance of the sun returning to conditions seen between 1645 and 1715 when the River Thames in London regularly froze over, as did the Baltic Sea."

"Freak" record cold and snow grip
tropical southern Brazil
Freezing in the tropics
29 Jun 11 - The southern parts of Brazil, a tropical country, have been stricken by record low temperatures, while several towns of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina have reported snow.
The temperature fell to minus 8.8 Celsius (about 23F) in the small town of Urupema on Tuesday, while in Cambara do Sul, along the southern border, the temperature dropped to minus 6.2C.
Three cities of the southern region also recorded record-low temperatures for the year on Tuesday. The lowest was in Curitiba, capital of Parana state, where the temperature hovered around one degree above zero.
In Sao Paulo state, in the southeastern region, temperatures also fell to record-low levels: in Sao Paulo the mercury fell to 2.3 degrees, the lowest since 2003, and in Campos do Jordao the temperature dropped to 3.8 degrees below zero, the lowest since 1998.
Coldest June on record for 85% of Northern Territory
1 Jul 11 - "It is the coolest June ever recorded in Darwin," says the weather bureau's senior forecaster Graeme King. "We have now had 42 nights in a row below 20 degrees Celsius."
"To put that in context," said King, "last dry season we only had 20 [nights] for the whole season."
Minimum temperatures have dropped into the teens every day this month.
About 85 per cent of weather stations across the Northern Territory recorded their coldest June on record.
Overnight temperatures north of Alice Springs have been between 4C and 6C below average.
Ireland coldest in 40 years - 2 Jul 11 - In their just released monthly review for June, Met Éireann say that “Shannon Airport, Valentia Observatory, Roche’s Point, Dublin Airport and Belmullet all reported their coldest June since 1972. http://www.irishweatheronline.com/irishweather/monthly-summary/parts-of-ireland-record-col dest-june-in-almost-40-years/22408.html
