Hello all
I am in the process of getting the engine rebuilt on my 68 firebird. I am also getting the transmission rebuilt and the builder asked if I wanted to go with a 3 speed transmission over the stock 2 speed. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

I'd recommend it. The two speed is reliable, but lacks the off-the-line performance that first gear provides. It's effectively 2nd and 3rd gear in the two speed trans. The crossmember and driveshaft should be a direct fit, and depending on whether you have a column or floor shifter, modifications should be minimal.

I would definitely go with the 3 speed. I dumped my 2 speed and and bumped up to a 4 speed set-up. I am not knocking the 2 speed, great for the track, but not very practical in today's world.

A T-350 automatic with a nice street shift kit would be the ticket, direct bolt in.

I think I am leaning towards upgrading to the 3 speed should I keep the old transmission.

A buddy of mine went from the th350 on his chev truck to a 700r4, huge difference for freeway driving. Only issue he had was getting the pos Lokar shifter set up and the solonoid that controls overdrive engagement, once that was sorted out it was awsome. They have a really low first gear and get the vehicle moving quickly.

If it's original to the car and you have a corner to stick it in, might as well...there not worth much on the market.

I sold the one I had because it knew I were never use it. They really don't add any value to the car, even if it was factory to the vehicle.

However, this is just my opinion.
