I have a '68 Firebird w/350 and it has a Mallory Unilite electronic distributor (not HEI). It was running fine until the other day. The engine started then died when shifted into gear. It will not start now and I tried pulling the coil wire and saw no sparking while cranking. The engine also cranked slower than previous(I had jumper cables on from a running vehicle). Any ideas?
Check condition of wires around battery and starter for corrosion and good grounds and connections. Do you have another coil laying around you could try? If no spark, has to be the secondary ignition system, somewhere.
I 2nd the module being dead. One "dirty little secret" I got from the Mallory tech guys is that small voltage spikes in the car's electrical system will kill these module stone dead. Last time I checked they are about $90.
I managed to kill two modules on my old Ford pickup before I found out about the filters, so now I always make sure to install Mallory's in-line "noise" filter in the wiring ahead of any Unilite distrib.

I did try a coil swap, but no change. There is a balast resistor that I need to check with ohm meter to see if it is fried. If it is ok I'll try the inline Mallory module.
Opted instead to order a new hei off ebay. Swapped out distributors nad got to run at idle, but doesn't want to rev-up, also getting 30V at the battery. Going to replace the voltage regulator and see if that will bring engine back to full life.
Wow, 30 volts at the battery would def cook some electrical stuff pretty quick. Hope you get it fixed...good luck
