I am wondering how these brackets mount? In the manual it looks like they just screw into the top of the radiator. is that correct, because that seems like a bad idea to me?
They do in fact screw into the top of the radiator. The factory Harrison radiators in our cars have a top portion, a strip in the middle, that's not part of the radiator. Pontiac used a couple short sheet metal screws to attach the cooler clips.
WARNING!!! Be VERY careful drilling a hole to start those two screws! You need a depth gauge on your drill, or if you don't have one, use a section of vacuum hose (or lots of duct tape) over the drill bit so only about 1/8" of the bit is showing. It's VERY easy to puncture the top of the radiator tank, so please be careful.
The two clips mount where the little notches are on the leading edge of the factory fan shroud.
That raised area is hollow, but as you can see, it's only raised about 1/4", so you have to be very careful drilling the holes.
The cooler lines they have now are either factory steel (which is how they were originally), or stainless (which is what the 69 T/A in the above photo looks like it has). There is some controversy about the clips, whether they should be black or natural metal. In the factory road tests and photos, the clips are natural metal, but I've seen many excellent restos where the clips were painted black.
