I think I have a 200 tranny from a 87 Monte SS, how can I make sure, I need some numbers or? Also the gearing ratio, is there a site I can go to get the info? The archives have some info on it but not this. Thinking about putting it in the bird to get the o.d. Thanks benny

Gearing on the 200-4r is 1st 2.74 2nd 1.57 3rd 1.00 4th 0.67
If it is a 200metric 3spd, dont bother.
There should be a tin or aluminum plate riveted to the trans with a 2 or 3 letter code denoting make and model, and a # code for the date, I think. I found a site to decipher mine once. I think it was the Buick GN site.... I'll look for it.
If it is the OE AOD from the SS, it should be an excellent candidate.
Because these are the numbers on a stock 87 Monte Carlo SS:
Q: How much horsepower and torque is the stock SS Engine rated at? 1984 through 1988: 180 HP @ 4800 RPM (flywheel) 225 ft/lbs @ 3200 RPM All horsepower (HP) readings are S.A.E. Net, measured at the flywheel of the engine, as installed, with a complete exhaust system and all accessories attached. This figure is measured on an engine dyno. It is not the horsepower at the rear wheels
I don't know what engine you are running but my stock 1968 350 numbers: 265 HP @ 4500 355 ft/lb @ 2800
Thats a 85 HP and 130 ft/lbs over the standard Monte SS and another reason to beef up the 200-4r.
I'm currently running one in my 68 Firebird and it's great (actually drove it today). I went with a professionally built one:
I think the Buick GNX ran the same trans in '87. 276 HP @ 4400 RPM 360 ft-lbs @ 3000 RPM http://www.gnttype.org/general/product.html The trans didn't last all that long if abused though.
The numbering system that is mentioned may not be exactly the same here in Canada, because the number of the 200-4r that I got out of an '88 Grand Prix with a 4 bbl SBC is a 13 digit number, not 15 as stated. The ID is HTF, and will end up behind my warmed up OHC6. I'll be making a fair bit more hp and torque than the SS "flywheel" figures, but I'm not at all worried about it handling the power in stock condition. Not to start an arguement, but I'm pretty sure that the numbers given are at the rear wheels. At least I hope so for the sake of all those Monte owners! My old stovebolt 235 in my '54 Chev truck made 245 ft.lbs of torque at 2000 rpm and 160 hp at 3600 rpm, with an extremely mild cam, siamesed intake and exhaust ports, and the stock exhaust manifold - on the dyno, with accessories and full exhaust system. Much as I like the thought, I don't think my engine is making more torque and almost as much hp as a modern engine that is about 30% bigger. Strange as it sounds, I've heard reports that the 200-4R is easier to modify for the 500 hp range than the 700-R4. That, plus the smaller size and what I consider to be better gear ratios and of course the fact that most have the B-O-P bellhousing, to me makes the 200-4R a great choice for updating the FGF. From what I understand, a post '86 tranny has all the factory improvements except the improved front pump.
Good stuff guys, exactly what I was looking for. TOHCan , I read somewhere that 86 & later were stronger than the previous 200's & excellent for bullet proofing. Also would stand up to some racing if not in the tens. That 4th gear ratio is really appealing as most of my driving is highway and the 950 holley loves the juice. I'll give a short description of what wil be in front of this tranny: 462 cu.in, between 450 & 500 hp.(our own estimate as haven't dynoed it yet) and did 12:57 first time out in the 1/4 on stock 14" tires. More replys welcome. Much appreciated benny

Bowtie overdrives claims their 2004r can hold up in a 10 second street car. Anyone have any experience with this company? http://www.2004r.com/faq/bighp.shtml
No experience with 200r4.com Freydog69. Here are some # off of the tranny: Plaque on tailshaft has this info, CZ F and also serial # 292-871CZF0484. On the servo cap is this info, Lester-5. also the # 86 and this # 8635692. Maybe someone can decode this, meanwhile will start looking at the sites that you guys gave me and these #'s might show up. Thanks benny

Benny, yours was built 17 days after mine! I'm pretty sure that it is the SS transmission, but it won't handle the extra torque of the 462 as is. You have some good parts in there, so it won't cost as much to upgrade, though. I was looking for one of these for my project so I could bolt it in with no mods (at least for the non-turbo OHC), but I should be fine with the one I got. However, if you are interested in some horse trading....
I have their (2004r.com) level 2 tranny in my Firebird. It is rated to 450-500 hp / 400-450 ft/lb torque for a future 400 stroked or 455 engine. Here is a thread on this conversion:
TOHCan, thanks for the info, sounds good so far and am going to open it up & see what's inside. I would like to upgrade this myself but still undecided as I don't want it to blow up because of a dumb mistake.I'll let you know about that horse trade if I do it myself
