Hi guys and gals, i'm new to this forum but i hope to spend some quality time here. I'm looking for opinions, which i realize could mean big trouble. I have owned for about 14-15 years a 1967 convertible that is a 326HO 4speed car with i believe a pretty impressive group of options, p/steering, p/disc brakes, p/top, p/windows, tilt wheel, deluxe interior w/headrests, console, fold down rear seat, hood tach, gauge package, 8track tape player(missing), rear mount antenna, rallyII wheels, i've never ran it through PHS to verify all the options, but that is whats on the car. Now the problem, at some point in its life before i got it, the 326HO was removed and discarded and a 1973 model 400 was put in and a 400 hood was added. Now i really enjoy the performance of the 400 and hate the thought of going back to a 326, but my question to the experts, is the car rare enough to warrant the switch back?? Phil.
Get the PHS for sure, the headrest seats are from a '69. If you had the original engine/trans, then I'd say yes, rebuild and reinstall. You could do it now, but wouldn't be a numbers matching car anyway. It's probably worth more now than it would be with a non-matching 326 cube. Matching original motor, may be worth what it would bring on the market right now with that 400 in it. As far as rarity goes, yeah it is a one year only engine option but rarity and desirability are two different things...hens teeth are rare, nobody wants them. Hope this is clear as mud
Welcome aboard, lots of good info to be found here.
"rare enough to warrant the switch back"....would it be "worth more"? to whom? are you selling it? or are you enjoying it.... if you could find a matching setup it "may" be worth more to a buyer...but if you enjoy it the way it is, just keep enjoying it... personally I drive a "former" 350 car with 400 in it and 400 hood...non orig paint color and interior....just so you know where I`m coming from

how can I? LOL...gets reminded about them here all the time....but they DO look good! Don't forget about them Buick rims...and no trim rings to loose....or scratch
I realize that it will never be "numbers matching", the original engine has probably long ago been melted down and turned into a bunch of toyotas. But i always thought that originality counted for something?? I'm not ready to sell the car yet and i do enjoy driving it, but i'm looking ahead at a retirement project, and by the numbers a 326HO is more rare than a 400 so should be more valuable down the road. Let me have all your thoughts. Phil.
Without the numbrs matching original engine and trans, it's probably worth more with a 400 in it with the 400 hood. I drive one of each, and you can't beat the 400.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. Yes, more rare, but as someone else noted, rarity doesn't make it necessarily more valuable. If given the choice right now and price was no obstacle, would you rather have a 400 convertible from the factory or would you rather have a 326 HO? I like the HO stripe, but I would take the 400 every single time. I could add a stripe to it.

I appreciate all the comments and suggestions,(by the way according to the body plate decoder on this website the headrest seats are original on this 67), here are somemore of my own thoughts. The engine is out on the stand to fix a massive oil leak, so i think i'll fix the leaks and put it back in for now. I can always pick-up a 326 stick engine and store it away for later consideration. If i do decide to go that route, nothing say's that it will have to be stock, it will just be back to "original". Phil.
Nice set of options! Although you could get a similarly configured 326HO together, and the 326HO is a pleasant little engine indeed, I see no reason not to enjoy it with the 400 in it.
If you decide to sell, the car won't be numbers matching anyhow even if you do spend the money replicating a 326HO with all the correct and dated parts. Numbers matching is only until the original engine is gone.

And also don't forget about the manual power top option, very rare. Not to mention that roof is also a magic dissappearing roof...ultra rare.
