As many of you know the stock seats do not provide support are not comfortable and they do not recline. I dont want racing seats I would like to retro fit some from a late model car of some kind but no high backs removable head rests only.
I saw a set mounted from a 02 TA they looked great but those are hard to find. Has anyone messed around with any other seats maybe a Cobalt or Grand AM something with some side support too.
Base track mods are not a problem, but its how wide the tracks and seats are that limit fitting.
I find my self always looking at the seats in new cars these days wondering if they would fit in my convert bird.
I know the guy that did the 2004 GTO interior in a 69 used BMW M3 seats I think. They look really good and have the built in seat belts.
I was looking at a mini cooper at the mall and noticed the seats are very narrow in that car.
I also rode in my friends chevy suburban. It had nice seat belts built into the seat and a flip down arm rest. I really miss having a good arm rest in the car on long trips.
I looked at some 69 grand prix seats one time and they were way to wide to fit.
The pro car seats they sell through summit and other places seem like a good way to go. They have a retro look, side support and not horribly expensive. I still like some of the percs that the newer cars have with built in seat belts.
I've a friend who just put in front seats from an '05 Accura. Fit like a glove and very reasonably priced. They came with a seat heater which he retrofitted the controls into the console.
I put a pair of pro car buckets in my 68 coupe. Very comfortable, and look good with the verticle pleats. They match very close to the pleats in my original back seat, but I am going to recover the back with the same material as the fronts.
They bolted right in with the tracks and adapters supplied but I find that the seat sits too high and there is not alot of head room left,(and I'm only 5' 8") so I think I will need to mount them to my original tracks.
Yes I went with the Rally 1000. They are comfortable with nice side bolster even for a bigger guy. But I have not used them long enough to comment on performance. They are definately not a high end seat by any means I'm not suggesting they are a cheap seat but I would suggest looking at them in a store before buying. I don't think it would be that difficult to modify, but the tracks supplied do not have alot of material to work with. They are as basic as can be. That's why I am considering using my original tracks. The seat is a flat bottom so hopefully the mounting holes will line up. Unfortunately I had to leave for work so I did'nt get time to play around with a fit.
I have the Pro Car 1000's in my car. I made my own brackets so I could get the seat lower to the floor. If the OP wants to see them in my car they are more than welcome to come over and check them out.
