Can anyone help me identify the use and proper mounting of a small (approx 1 1/2" x 1 3/4"), bare steel bracket with a short screw hole in the middle and larger, apparently unused hole towards one end, that is found on the forward end of the inner door frame on a `69 with deluxe interior. Took both door panels off in preparation for some body work and one of these was tightly screwed to the right door whereas the other was held by its screw but only loosely on the left door. The bracket has two small slits in it,forming slightly bent 'tangs' that I would guess are supposed to sit on the top edge of the inner door frame, but neither was attached that way

Dude, you're going to have to post a pic or two. I can't imagine what you're asking about.

Does it have black mesh material or felt on the end of it?

If so it is probably the anti-rattle bracket for the door glass...

A pic would be very helpful.

Let me try my luck at mindreading (becasuse there isn't much else it could be). It may be an upper bracket that supports the top of the door panel, attached to the top, inner shell of the door.

Are you talking about the piece on the upper left side of this picture?

Yes, that's the bracket. There's no evidence it ever had any felt material or 'fuzzies', so I concluded it wasn't a window anti-rattle piece. In your photo it's upside down from how I found both of mine, which had the large hole below rather than at the top. Many apologies to all for considering my question without photos. Colorado 68's photo shows the bracket I'm talking about. What's it for and how is it correctly installed?

Thanks again,

grant

You know... that's a good question. That piece was on the doors when I took them apart. So I of course put them back on during the restoration. Best I guessed is they were support for the door panels. Maybe someone else can chime in and confirm.
Here's another picture with that piece installed. You can also see the fron and back anti-rattle brackets with the fuzzie.
