The 68 I picked up in June had a Holley 750 on it. It was wasted and now I have to replace it. The car has an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, and I'm going to go with an Edelbrock carb. I just can't figure out which one.
First, my car. 400 ci, bored 30x, Performer RPM intake, Crower Baja Beast II cam, stock headers, automatic, 1:256 gear ratio. I would prefer efficiency over squeezing every bit of performance out (I'm not racing this thing).
So my choices are the Edelbrock Performer 750 (manual choke, as for some reason they advise against the electric choke when you have a Performer RPM intake) or the Thunder AVS 650. The only difference seems to be the secondary adjustments on the Thunder series. A guy from the tech line at Edelbrock recommended the Thunder series...I don't know though. Any one with opinions?
I've read good things about the AVS carbs for that very reason, the adjustable secondaries. Also noteworthy is that many people are very happy with a cast iron intake and a well built quadrajet. The way you describe your application you would probably be happier with the latter.
Given the choice, the original intake and a qjet would be great. I have the original intake but requires some TLC. I also have a qjet that needs TLC (but I don't believe it's the original that came with the car...actually I think it's from a 67 and a 600 cfm).
Either way, I need something I can get on the car now. The AVS is more tune-able, but I'll be honest here - I don't care, because I'm new to carbs and have enough learning already. I'm more concerned with get something that's more efficient than powerful, but not something that will bog down the car.
I was confused, the qjet I have is from a 1967 Chevy 4 barrel for a 327 or 350 auto trans (#7037202). I just knew it wasn't original to the car (even though I was told so when I bought the car).
