I pulled the steering column out of my 67 firebird today, to swap with another column I bought off ebay- I thought they were both for a 67 buit i think not now. My column has a "half round" plug on it with 8 wires the new column has a flat plug with 9 wires on it. Here are the colors: MINE- blk w/wht stripe, green, blk w/ylw stripe, purple, brown, dk blue, blk w/blu stripe, blk.
I would try to remove the wheel and components then risk a short in the column. it is complicated but you can do it it if you take your time. there is a small c clip on the shaft that keeps it together once removed everything comes apart easly. putting it back together is more of a challenge but better then a short circuit.
Steve, When replaced my switch 3-4 years ago I did a lot of research into the various switches used on 1st Gen Birds. There was a boatload of turn signal switches. I do recall an extra wire (gray wire)on my new switch I ended up with, which I cut off because it is for the column shifter lamp (possibly the difference in 8 vs 9 wires). I also recall a straight connector on one of the replacement switches and an adapter to meet the curved connector. Look at the Classic Industries Catalog. One of their switches has an adapter shown.
Steve -update. I got my old factory switch and the wires match the colors of your "Mine" the looked at the new switch I put on the car and the colors match your "New". I see that my new replacement switch has the adapter. So, your EBay column must have a newer switch. Why don't you contact your EBay seller and see if he still has the adapter attached to the dash harness.
Thanks I appreciate the help, I can't get ahold of the Ebay seller anymore (go figure...) So I think I'll try to order the adapter or get adventureous and splice the old plug onto the new harness...Thanks Again!!! Steve
Oh, man, don't go splicing around on that area! Just do more research and find the part you need. I'll look at my half-round and the other one on my 68 and get back to you.

What was wrong with your old column? I have extra columns with the half round harness.

It may take a while but I'm sure you could get used to minor things like honking the horn with the signal switch, right turn with the hazard switch, left turn with the horn button, wait till you see what happens when you step on the brake peddle... Other than the gray wire the "new" one matches the wiring diagram in my 67 Service Manual. How do the colours match with the rest of the harness on the other side of the plug?
Black -horn Lt blue - left front turn signal Dk blue - right front turn signal Brown - emergency flasher Purple - blinker flasher (blinker supply) Yellow - left rear turn signal Dk green - right rear turn signal White - Stop light switch The wiring diagram shows "gray" going to instrument lighting.
Thanks again, better judgement took over and i ordered the part from Classic Industries. I drag race this car and after bouncing off the guardrail a month ago i decided to replace a couple parts, first the steering box, the old manual box was worn out...anyway when i pulled the box, the bearings in the steering column also fell out, so i got a new column..... now i just have to find a good price on tubular a-arms..
230 Sprint6- can you tell me where the purple (blinker supply) wire goes. After coming off the connector (from the steering column) it has been cut. I've owned this car for 11 years and never had turn signals- 'bout time I got it fixed... since the PSCA requires turn signals for all they're different classes...
Well I got everything plugged in and hooked up. Blinkers don't work at all, flashers only work if I have the "park" lights on, if I turn the headlights on, the flashers go out... So i think I'm just going to order a complete, new harness and use what I need. The car doesn't have a horn, radio, heater/AC, dome-courtesy light, or wipers. All I want to work are the headlights/taillights and the blinkers/flashers- Is that really too much to ask?? :-)
