I have a 67 firebird and the title has the letter "V" for the assembly plant (7th spot). My tag on the driver side door has a "U" on it. What does this mean, all the other numbers match, it is only this letter that is different.

Simple. Typo on the title. All '67's were build at Lordstown and nowhere else.
A previous owner gave the DMV the wrong info or a DMV clerk read or copied it wrong.

When I go to register it, will it be a problem? How can I get it fixed? I know if I go into the DMV and say they made a mistake, they will not say OK and fix it. How can I prove it and what would I get document wise that they would except to change it?
Is there a website that says they only used a "U" and NOT a "V" in the 67 VIN. When I seen it, I knew it was a typo, because the letters do look pretty close. Is there a place where I can print out all the possible codes for the 67 year model.
Just take the car to the DMV and make them come out to verify the VIN.
Every time I have moved to a new state they require a clerk to come outside and verify the VIN's on all my vehicles when I register them for the 1st time.
Point out to them that you are going to have a major hassle if law inforcement pulls you over because the 2 do not match.

IIRC there were only 3 factories for firebirds = 3 different VIN letters for the letter ...if GM didnt use a V....and somewhere I`m sure theres info about that.....but if you can get one of them off their a$$ to go out and verify...it would help.
I want to register it soon, I'm nowhere near the car running. It's going to come apart to the shell and then get a ground up rebuild. The car won't be ready to drive for at least 4 years. the person I bought it from never registered it, so I have the title and a bill of sale from the person I bought it from. I just want it in my name before I start the rebuild.. I would rather deal with this now before I dump tons of money into it.
You should be able to register a car for title only. So you take the existing title and bill of sale and get the title changed into your name. Ignore the typo at this time.
Then you spend several years and a lot of money rebuilding it.
When it is running, and you can bring it to the DMV and deal with the title typo.
In order to fix the typo now, you would have to have a professional come out to your house to verify the VIN for $$$ and you may still have a huge hassle.
Again - ignore the typo for now. If it was in the serial number (end numbers of the VIN), that would be different.

Thanks guys for all the great advice. I just didn't want to spend thousands on the car then have problems trying to register it. I feel confident this is not that big of a deal and I think I will move forward with the build...I will keep everyone posted and post pictures of the build as I go...
