I have a uncut 69 dash in my bird and would like to install a radio that doesn't force me to cut the dash. It would be nice to have a radio I can use (with some power) but I am not opposed to installing a factory AM or FM radio that will fill the void, light up and look pretty while I installing a good radio somehwere else.
I have two questions:
Is there a radio out there I can USE that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, some of the prices should be illegal.
Also, am I locked into just a 69 firebird factory radio? There are alot of late 60's early 70's radios out there that look like they will work and have the blue color tone I think I need to match my heater controls.
Only a 69 bird radio will work in that hole. Some other will go in but they won't look right. Some have had their factory radio retro fitted to AM/FM with an input jack for MP3 or whatever. Pretty much an arm and a leg though.
Units designed for 1982 Honda Accord application will fit. It's not pefect, but it's a hell of a lot better than anything else on the market. It's plenty good enough for someone who would run 15" on these cars. After all, if you'll be happy as a clam with the way the raido fits. The only problem you will have is that you cannot find any units that will fit an '82 Accord.

I used one out of a '70 midsize (i.e. Tempest) and it fit good I think. If you leave the buttons pulled out it looks like it is the correct fit. I just use it to fill the hole and have a newer radio mounted elsewhere.

The A body radios(GTO) fit the hole but like you say the buttons aren't as long. I believe someone sells the longer buttons if you want to go through the trouble to swap them out. Or you can just pull them out and leave it that way.
I just happen to have one for sale if anybody needs it.
It was certainly long enough, but I don't remember the one I used having a heat sink on it, but it seemed to fit just fine. I leave the push buttons pulled out and it looks good. I don't actually use it for sound. I'm not sure exactly what car it came out of, the service tag decoded to a '70 midsize.
