Quick question...what goes on first, the chrome roof molding, or the weatherstripping?
When I got the car, both were gone. I have the weatherstripping as part of a kit, but I don't know if I need to order the replacement chrome molding now, or if I can install the weatherstripping and add the chrome later.
It's tough to answer these type of questions because 50% of the problems around here are total lack of communication. (The other 50% is because lots of people should keep it zipped when it's obvious that they have never done the type of repair they are offering repair advice.)
The weatherstrip sits in a chrome holder, and there is a chrome strip that goes on the edge of the roof line along the side of the car. The chrome weathestrip holder goes on, by default, before the weatherstrip because the weatherstrip goes into it.
The gutter molding, the long strip that goes along the side of the roof has nothing to do with the weatherstrip; as a result, it has nothing to do with weatherstrip install.
Thanks. I think I get what you're saying. The roof gutter seems like it's part of the roof (probably technically isn't...but on my car it's painted body color and looks like it is). There should be a chrome holder that goes on the inside of the door opening...then the weatherstrip goes into that. Sound right?
I ordered the chrome holder parts and they'll be here next week. It will probably be more self-explanatory with the parts in hand. I got the car in pieces, so I didn't get the experience of disassembly, so some of these simple things are more confusing than I think they should be.
Look in the Ames catalouge. They show pretty good illustrations and do a good job at explaining which one is which. When you get the sos on incorrect orders, there is a point in which they need to quit blaming the customer and take some personal responsiblity in guiding the customer to the correct selection.
What you describe is roof-rail weatherstrip holder. Use dum-dum (strip caulk) between the holder and the body. CO NOT use weatherstrip glue on the weatherstrip. FIY NEVER use glue on weatherstrip on the fgf coupe. In fact, if you use glue on the trunk strip, it will likely make it leak, and you can rest assured that it will make it rust.
Thanks. I'll head out and dig up some strip caulk this weekend.
Funny thing...I've ordered catalogs from about every part source I can find and no one has sent one yet (Ames included). Even the companies I've ordered parts from haven't sent any catalogs. Using online catalogs is fine...but sometimes I just want a catalog down in the shop to reference quickly. You'd think they'd be quicker to try to get their catalog in the hands of someone with a project. Oh well...what do I know.
