Can any one help me with the installation of new gaskets for the tail lights on my 68?

I cannot get them to not leak. It seems that tightening the housing just doesn't smash the gasket enough to make a complete seal in the corners.

The body is nice and straight and I just cant visually see what the problem could be.

I test by running water down from the top of the tail light as it would if it were to roll down the trunk. You can definately see it dripping from the corners.

Anyone else have this problem?

Back the gaskets up with dum-dum. People who don't know correct automotive vernacular may call it strip caulk.

Something that is almost as good as dum-dum, and will work fine in this application, is stuff called duct compound/sealer/pukey whatever. It comes in a small brick that costs a couple of bucks. Cost wise, the same amount of dum-dum costs about $20.

How much and where you place it requires common sense, something I cannot teach.

Ok, so common sense aside, when you say "back the gaskets up", do you mean put it behind them to make them smash up against where they need to seal or put pieces of this stuff where I believe it to be leaking at. Specifically the corners.

I would put dum dum on the baxck of the gaskets, then push up against the metal....

I know I most likely did it wrong ,but I siliconed mine 10 yrs ago.

Eastwoods is my supplier for "dum-dum" which is called 3M Strip Caulk.

I also use it to help with house exterior door gaskets and other things that need help to not move or stay in position.
