Does anyone have any recommendations for buying a new steering column for a 68 Firebird? I need to replace mine and wondered if anyone had experience with the after market companies like ididit or Flaming River. Are they easy to install? Is there one company out there that you've had great experience with? Any help and/or suggestions would be highly appreciated!
On the plus side I got the tilt option I did not have before, a column that could be painted to match my interior, it replaced the OEM rag joint with a much nicer U-joint and it came with an adapter to fit the Firebird/Camaro U-shaped wiring harness connection.
On the bad side, these columns do not work with the factory mounting brackets unless you do some hot rodding. The standard mount is a chunk of billet aluminum that you just bolt to the bottom of the dash.
I preferred a much more stock appearance and it cost me. I took a lot of careful measurements after mocking up my interior with the new column and went to a very skilled welder who fabricated stainless steel mounting tabs, carefully welded them to my SS column (without melting the wiring harness inside) and then drilled and tapped 3 holes to work with my OEM column mounting brackets.
Then after installation, I could finished it off by installing the plastic OEM column to dash trim covers. It looks pretty darn factory.
