Just put a holley carb on a 400 for a buddy. Straight out the box with little to no tuning..... They have a couple economical versions available. I have a edelbrock carb that ran good. So really either would work fine but why not try a quadrajet?
put on the one you are familiar with....thereby you have least problems.... I have a Holley 650.....as when I got my car , my carb was bad..I asked my professional restorer friend "which is the best carb to buy".? this was his reply: "use the carb. you or someone you know likes to work on" so i asked "which one do YOU prefer to work on"? he said : Holleys " (he used to race) I said: "thats rthe one were buying"!
Thanks for the info. Im open to the quadrajet? Any advantages to that?
There are smaller primaries on the Q-Jet whereas Edelbrock, for example, are square bore carbs, meaning primaries and secondaries are the same size.
The smaller primaries are better for regular driving fuel economy and should provide better throttle response. The larger secondaries are what will give you the kick when you punch the throttle.

I put a 68 quadrajet on my 400 that had a edelbrock on it. The car performed better with the quadrajet than the edelbrock. But that was just my experience. If me I would go holley or quadrajet....

Yeah! Hear eveyone talking about working on other carbs? If you put a quad on it, you won't have to work on it. I hate working on cars, so the quad is the only way to go.

I did the exact same thing. When I first bought our bird back in 2001 it had an Edelbrock. Then I bought a 68 Q-jet from Terry (which is now on my 67 LeMans) and the car ran ten times better. Two years ago when I bought the 67 LeMans it too had an Edelbrock on it. Pulled it off and put the Q-jet from the bird on it and the car ran MUCH better!
