I've got a 98 Ford Escort ZX2 with a 2.0L zetec engine. I trying to diagnose an engine temp issue. It's got a 2 speed elecric fan. Does anyone know at what temps the fan speeds should come on at?
I'm on a forum for ZX2's and I have asked there, but most are just interested in ricing their cars, and aren't really knowledgeable on the mechanics.
Fords O.E. info is horrible for these types of issues...they use pinpoint tests and there isn't one specific for your issue. If it's overheating and the fan(s) don't come on or come on too late you'll have to do the oldfashioned troubleshooting for it. If I had to guess, based on past experience the fan should come on at somwhere between 200 - 215 degrees. What is the exact issue you are having?
It's not overheating, but it just seemed to be running hot. while driving it runs at about 200, and when stopped it heats up to 220 and the fan comes on and cools it to about 205. Just trying to figure out if it should be coming on sooner than that, or if it is supposed to run that hot.
I wouldn't worry about it too much, you could try a new thermostat and radiator/expansion tank cap, but that would just be piece of mind. As long as the fans cycle you should be ok.
The very front head bolt is known for rusting off in the head. It's the one closest to the drivers side and the front of the car. I had a over heating problem and a small leak. I heard about the head bolt problem and pulled the valve cover. Everything looked fine until I put a socket on the head bolt and it just spun.
