I don’t think trim tags are illegal. Not ethical, but not illegal. The state doesn’t really care what color your car is. Now the VIN tag is completely different, and is illegal to sell without being on a vehicle. I believe it’s also illegal to alter a VIN tag.
While that's true, I don't see how selling it is illegal. It's the attachment part that is. If he sold the rotted car with the title no one would complain.
Ahh, clever. To the DMV it looks like he sold a '67 Firebird 400...just sign the title away and hand over the keys (uh, I mean VIN tags and cowl tags). Wow!
