I have a '68 bird with 250 OHC, in-line 6, single barrel carb. I also have what seem like a 2-3 second delay from when the time I mash the gas to when the car responds. I recently had a reputable carb shop rebuild my carburetor and really dont think that is the issue. Someone suggested replacing the fuel pump. I can't find an exact one anywhere for this eng & carb. I tried all major restoration catalogs and parts stores. Anyone know where I can find an exact match or suitable replacement? Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
It doesn't sound like the fuel pump to me. Sounds like the accelerator pump that Ponti described. However, you see the OHC fuel pumps pop up on Ebay from time to time. I recommend having a spare anyway.
Fuel pump symptoms are usually loss of power at higher RPM's; not off the line stumbling.
Unless the car stumbles throughout the entire RPM range.

It turned out to be a vacuum leak at the accelerator pump adjustment screw. when it was rebuilt it must not have been screwed in enough to prevent it from leaking. after adjusting, the vacuum pressure increased 5 psi. Contributing factors, needed new points and condensor and bad gas. Thanks for all the helpful advise, it sent me in the right direction.
