hi I have a 69 firebird with a 350 from a 72 lemans 2 barrel carb. I cant get a good 2 barrel anymore so I wanted to put a 4 bbl on it. I want to go with the Edelbrock preformer intake and Im not sure wether to get the 1405 or 1406 carb... the car has the heat riser style choke now so Im assuming I should get the 1405 , does this sound right?? I dont want to make a mistake. Ive owned the car for 26 years now and its been sitting for the past 3 yrs and Im dying to drive it again. Any insight would be greatly appreciated
thanks gus68, I'm gonna give that idea alot more thought.
Sorry I did not get you a lot of reasons why. My opinion is based on what I have read here on the forum the last two years. Also, my first bird did not have a stock carb and I was constantly tuning the engine as a result. I was lucky enough to get a 400 HO Quadrajet from Doug this year and I can't wait to try it. Gotta put my rear end on 1st!
Doug swears I will get 50 mpg and loonies rolling out the tail pipe with that carb! lol

My 350 came out of a '71 Lemans and I spent many hours trying to get a 2bbl to run right, and I've been playing with carbs for 30+ years. I ended-up putting a 1406 (electric choke) on an old school P4B intake. Runs awesome now. I am a Q-jet fan also, but they are getting pricy and usually need to be played with to get right. The Edlebrock/Carter's always seem to work best for me.
My '69(originally 2 BBL) came with an Edelbrock intake manifold and Edelbrock 4 BBL carb installed. The Edelbrock carb is really just a (license-built) version of the Carter AFB and is almost identical to the (original) Carter AFB on my 327/300 HP '65 Sting Ray, which runs really well with a carb that hasn't been rebuilt/tuned or adjusted in more than 25 years! I have no issues with Quadrajets (had them on my '68 Sprints (2) back in the late '70s), but I wouldn't dismiss the Carter (Edelbrock) option for reliability and simplicity.
any Ideas for which q-jet i should use on that 72 lemans 350?? I just installed a proper 1972 stock 4 bbl intake and Im ready for a carb but dont know which one to use. also can an edelbrock carb go on a stock 4 bbl intake??
I don't think so, since the Quadrajets have a different bore arrangement than the Edelbrock, which is essentially a Carter AFB, likely built under some license agreement.
I ran a junk yard 350 2bbl in my car for a while, then built a nice QJ, and used a stock intake manifold. I was not impressed. I believe that I over carbureted the motor. It ran fine, very reliable, easy to tune, but it wasn't anymore exciting to drive. I would not do that again.
