Just put in my engine / tranny in my 69 coupe and the engine looks like it's not centered in the engine bay. If you look at the lower pully in relationship to a brace that runs under the pullys (brace runs in same direction as the crank) looks to be the center of the engine is more to the passanger side than in the center.

I have new motor mounts on both the frame and engine. I am putting a 1970 350 and a rebuilt 200R4 in it. I searched the web for images of engine compartments and it looks like this off set situation may be normal, can anyone confirm either way?

It was done to help clear brake booster etc....imagine the problems people had in Australia , moving steering etc to opposite side!

And perceptive. I probably owned my '68 for a couple decades before I read a similar question on either the List or here and then went out to look at mine and discovered it was off center too.

Hi everyone - new here and just found this thread.

I've got a '69 that a previous owner put a 400 into and while looking into why it idles so hot I noticed that the installed fan is very undersized. It also doesn't sit centered in the shroud, but instead is offset maybe an inch or so to the passenger side.

I'm relieved to read that the offset is normal, but is it normal that it results in the fan being offset in the shroud?

The fan shroud should also have the offset and the fan be centered in the shroud

Hmm... Looks like there might be an issue after all...

Let me try to clarify. Looking at the radiator surround it's clear that the hole for the radiator is offset. So the radiator is centered in this cutout, the shroud centered over the radiator, and the fan centered shroud, radiator, and radiator cut out, correct?

If that's the case then something is incorrect on this car. I have to verify this tomorrow during the day, but it seems like the engine is mounted at a slight angle, not just off to the passenger side . Is this correct or incorrect?

Thanks guys!

Not sure what you are asking. But the engine should be offset towards the passenger side and angled, since the trans tail shaft is centered. The fan is offset with the engine and is centered in the shroud fan opening, which is offset with the engine. You may have a small block camaro shroud. Chevy small blocks are centered.

You have two options: shift the radiator or the core. Tip, shifting fender core as the way to align the nose to the doors nets incredible results.

The point is moot if you have airspace around your fan. The fan needs to fill the shroud and the fan needs to sit inside of the shroud about half of the blade-width.

If it's undersized, it will cavitate lamf, and you are wasting your time with anything other a correctly fitting fan in the shroud.

I had the exact same problem and it drove me nuts trying different fans, moving the radiator and adjusting the shroud. When I put in the new engine, I adjusted the motor mounts and the transmission mount about 1/8" to center the fan in the shroud. There is a small amount of play in those bolts (the mounts that bolt to frame) which allow a little adjustment. Now the fan sits in the shroud as it should and even gap all around.
