Hi all, I've done a lot of work on my car over the last year, - 67 Firebird 400. One of the things was I had a new alternator put on. I just replaced the belts again, and this time I noticed the alternator seems out of alignment to the water pump pulley. Just slightly, but it makes the belt twist a little. I've looked at this forever, the old original alternator looks identical to the new one. As you guys know, it is an exact fit on the bottom where the main pivot bolt holds it, the top is held on by the two bracket arms. There seems to be no adjustment, that would be impossible because of the tight fit of the bottom bolt. BTW, the power steering pump pulley is lined up perfectly with the water pump and the main shaft pulley.
Any ideas on this?
While searching this I see people talking about the Alternator part numbers, do people get there old alternators rebuilt? Never considered that, I do still have it, and think it is original.

Thanks
Hef

I always recommend you get you alternator fixed. Swapping your old alternator for a rebuild is a rip off. Look inside. The parts that need to be replaced are very cheap.

OEM parts fit better as well.

Include some photos of your alternator and perhaps we could figure out what's wrong.

Possibly they put the pulley on the wrong way on the alternator.

Fast service on that Alternator rebuild. Got it back today, looks beautiful. So I got it installed real quick, and I think I see the problem. Or I thought I did, The Alternator is not level. Checking off the pulley, it is tilted back. But then I checked other pulleys and they are tilted back also. Are they supposed to be?

thanks

Impossible for the water pump and crank pulley to be tilted back more than the centerline of the engine

So the centerline of the engine should be tilted back? I never knew that. Thought everything was level.
