I would like your opinions on this car that a person I know is thinking about purchacing. The car is a 68 firebird thats in total pieces. This is what the seller is telling him. "The car is a factory 400, deluxe interior, four speed, posi, factory color is red." This is some of the parts he has. Factory 400 hood with tack, old 400 front bumper new rear bumper, all fenders and doors, all glass except the front, rally gauges, numbers matching 400 motor thats in pieces and needs rebuilt, factory muncie 4 speed thats been rebuilt, factory front disc, new tail lights, all seats but they need redone, new carpet and door seals thats still in box, door panels. The list goes on. I work with the seller so I do believe his word. This is the catch! The original 400 car was hit hard. He had this work done to it. The 400 car fire wall was cut out and welded to a doner car. He say the quarters have very little rust. After he had this done at a shop the car has sat in his garage since for a couple of years. Again its in total pieces but he has 90% of the car. He wants $3,500.00 for the car. MY question to you is that if the car was restored will there be any issues with calling it a # mathing car? Thanks Joe

It's not numbers matching. The body is a part, and the other parts don't belong to the body.
Technically, it cannot be numbers matching as many of the factory stamped VIN numbers will not be correct. Close inspection will always reveal the welds that have been done, and the modifications done to the donor car. It won't be an investment quality car.
If he's up to the challenge of building a basket case and plans to keep the car and not sell it as numbers matching, does it matter?
Which title does the car have? Donor or crash victim?
Vikki 1969 Goldenrod Yellow / black 400 convertible numbers matching
THAT IS BASICALLY THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD WITH A TA I BOUGHT.I JUST USED THE ORIGINAL 350 CAR NUMBERS AND USED WHATEVER PARTS FROM THE TA AND TITLED IT TO THE 350 CAR.MY CAR AINT NEVER GOING TO THE BARRETT JACKSON AUTO AUCTION SO WHY DO ALL THAT UNNECESSARY WORK.DRIVE YOUR BIRD AND ENJOY IT.I SELL PARTS FOR MONEY:I DRIVE MY BIRDS FOR PLEASURE.NOT WORRYING ABOUT RESALE VALUE.
Your friend will spend another $10,000 putting this car into shape. I think he would do better by looking for a car that is starting out with fewer issues. Spending an extra $3000 on the shell will produce a cheaper and better outcome.
LOL salmon...Joe, sometimes the best way to gauge a car in parts like that is to determine what itd be worth if you parted it out, cuz thats basically what it is. Are the parts worth $3500? Evidently if someone cut the firewall out of it, it was in pretty bad shape after the wreck, so there could be unseen damage to the frame, etc, which means putting it back together into driveable condition wouldnt be a short-term project. And $3500 would be a pretty good start on finding a more "assembled" project car. Just my 1½ cents worth.
Scott, Yes you are right. The body was replaced and the firewall with the vin was maintained. I havent seen the parts but Ill now more come monday. I told the buyer that it sounded like a good deal to me. He was going to try and go look at it over the weekend. Thanks for your advice. Joe
I misunderstood also. I thought it was so damaged at one time that the firewall was replaced. If the car is straight, that's much of the battle. It sounds worth $3500.
As far as number matching, I don't think this meets the intent of "matching". Half the car is not original.
