I just purchased a highly optioned Firebird 400 convertible that's mostly complete and original (except for a repaint in 1990). It's a very nice driver, and I'm enjoying it.
The one thing that does not work is the cruise control. From what I can tell from the Factory Service Manual, everything's there except for the ball chain that connects the diaphragm to the carb. Any ideas where I can find one? I checked PY, Ames, and Ebay...I'm kind of surprised that something like this would be difficult to locate. Am I missing the obvious?
If you ever want to sell the cruise control I will buy it from you.
I'll keep your offer in mind, but the plan is to keep the car complete, as it was ordered from the factory. Although I may change my mind when I try to replace the spark plugs..it's really tight in there with the cruise, AC, PS, PB, and vacuum lines...
I bought a section of ball chain from ACE (chrome #10) for about $3.00. Because I'm also missing the clips that secures the chain to the carb and servo, I also bought two little bags of pieces that hopefully I can adapt for that purpose. Would still like to get my hands on the correct parts though.
I believe I found the correct clip for the carb bracket--I'll know when it arrives. It appears, however, that the servo is not correct. From the few photos I've seen, it appears that the metal tab on the original servos curls back, in a semi-circle, so that the chain can slip into place and hold securely. The metal tab on mine projects straight out. Does anyone have insight into what a correct servo looks like?
