Has anyone done a swap to move the automatic transmission level from the steering column to the floor? How hard was it? I saw Year One has repop shifters. Was there ever Firebirds with a floor shifter and no console?
Just got back from deployment and looking for my next bird project. -Rob
I did it in my 67, I found a 67 bird that was scrap, and it had the correct floor shifter, console and steering column. I also changed my trans from a 2spd powerglide to a turbo 350, and had to rebuild the shifter for a 3spd, wasn't a quick change out, but it can be done in 2 days. I didn't think it was hard at all, just a little bit of work, depends how much you love your bird, I wanted it to look like a stock setup, so I went all out when I did mine.I love it!!! I also kept the old parts.
I changed my old 1967 from a 2-spd on the column to a 3-spd stick. Also has a doner car at the time. I did it when I was 18 and didn't know muck about these cars. Still wasn't that hard.
The key to any job like this is to make sure you have all of the parts for the job before you start. It is really not all that difficult if you have some mechanical experiance and common tools. I went from column automatic to floor mounted manual with no major glitches. I did it over the winter so I really have no idea of the time involved. When I started I didn't have the console or steering column so those came later. Good luck.
