Please note: I am very aware that this car has a BAD exhaust leak which is due to a corroded "Y" pipe off the manifold!
Just thought I'd share a major milestone in the life of my 1968 Firebird Sprint, 4.1 Litre OHC6 w/4BBL and 3-speed Hurst floor. In order to understand the significance of this video, you need to know that this car has been sitting for 7 years outside under a tarp.
To make a long story short, let me just say I did ALMOST NOTHING to get this car back on the road after 7 years. All I did was buy a new battery and one tire which was beyond re-inflating. I added air to the other 3 tires. The oil still looked good, coolant still looked good (was mostly ethylene glycol because I knew it would be sitting for a long time when I parked it back in 2005) and brake fluid was good. Car shifted into 1, 2, 3 & R when parked so all systems were go for driving. Car is registered and insured and all systems are road ready!
Anyway, this video shows the first moments of my brief drive after all these years. It was especially emotional for my sister because my father (the original purchaser) died a few months ago so I did this in his honor. My dad loved this car. He loved the Sprint engine. I remember sitting in the back seat as a little kid with my sister on long family trips.. Watching my dad shift and feeling the car develop it's incredible acceleration. You see me depart here for the first time in 7 years. I had no problems whatsoever with the car on this drive. I was shocked at just how well it ran. Shifting improved as it warmed up!
Sorry about the bad exhaust leak and my bad shift going into 2nd gear but it still proves that old Sprints never die.. You Sprint freaks should especially enjoy this!
